The Renault Koleos is a compact SUV that's exactly what you'd expect from the French auto giant. Wonderful designs, a lot of character and a practical, spacious cabin make it a popular choice and a stand out performance in its niche. Most at home on the road, it's an excellent option for families or those people who want the versatility of an 4x4 without the massive size.
Released in 2008, the Koleos is actually Renault's first real SUV, and it's a good one at that. Available in both front or 4 wheel drive, it's refined and comfortable, and makes any length of journey very easy. While it prefers to stick to the tarmac, it can venture into the wild, but isn't a fan of getting dirty to be honest. Despite this, you do get some good traction and it's composed on the road through all types of conditions. Not overly popular in the UK it has to be said, the Koleos was withdrawn in 2010.
A great looking car, it has all the design prowess the motoring industry has come to expect from Renault. Quite funky and quirky, there are some strange shapes, weird angles and bizarre lines, but overall they come together to produce something that's nice on the eyes. The interior doesn't have as much flair, but it is relaxed and comfy. While it is a 5 seater, the rear is best suited to children as leg room isn't that good. An easy use cockpit with tactile dials and switches makes the whole experience very straight forward and there's a substantial kit list across the various trims; Privilege models being particularly good. A large 400 litre boot means loading up with shopping isn't a problem.
Very soft and forgiving to drive, the Renault is definitely geared towards comfort. Responsive steering means it'll go where you want, and the turning circle is quite small too, allowing good navigation in towns. A good amount of grip thanks to the clever 4x4 system means confidence can remain high throughout, and slippery roads are no cause for concern. Capable as a long distance cruiser, the Koleos is also happy with pottering around doing everyday jobs. Some solid diesel engines provide adequate performance and good economy too.
The fact that not many were sold in the UK means the Koleos could be quite difficult to find, however if there's ever a place to get your hands on one for less it's MOTORS. One of the best websites around for second hand cars for sale, there's a vast number of autos available at seriously discounted prices. Even the rarest of cars can be sought out here, so a used Renault Koleos shouldn't be too difficult to come across. And then you'll pay next to nothing for a quality one. How good is that?
The straightforward fact is that the Renault Koleos is a good compact SUV that combines nice designs, a good driving experience and a decent interior. While it didn't leave a lasting impression in Britain, that doesn't mean you shouldn't consider it. In actual fact the Renault is great value and one of the best cars in its class. Full of French flair and with a nice character, it's a simply a great run around for families.
