Audi's A4 compact executive range transformed the image of the whole brand. Previously, Audi's were rather dull but efficient cars. The A4 arrived in 1996 and launched the idea of Audi as an upmarket brand, selling on looks, prestige and technology.
In the second and third incarnations of the acclaimed A4, a cabriolet version was produced too. The first arrived in 2003, finally replacing the Audi 80-based convertible that had lasted until 2000.
It was immediately one of the most prestigious family cabriolets available. The Cabrio retained the saloon's sleek bodylines and sophisticated technology and added an electro-hydraulic roof. Most importantly there was plenty of room for four adults and their luggage (thanks to a usefully sized boot).
The Cabrio model has been continually updated ever since. From 2006, the suspension was upgraded to improve the handling.
Through all the updates, the car has kept its place as one of the best-built convertibles. It has a classy image thanks to its simple but timeless styling, and respectable 1.8L and 2L engines are a popular choice. Inside, you'll find high-quality plastics and superior fabrics in a decidedly up-market cabin. The A4 Cabrio is smooth and refined on the road, and there's a wide range of engines to choose from. There's even a Quattro four-wheel drive Cabrio model.
