BMW entered small convertible market with its 1 Series soft-top and it's proved to be a very popular choice with UK motorists looking for great performance coupled with very reasonable running costs.
The power comes from a range of petrol and diesel engines. Petrol models go from 1.8L up to a very powerful 3.5L and in the 2L diesel, the 1 Series can offer a frugal alternative that is still capable of taking you from 0 to 62mph in 7.5 seconds.
The ride and handling of the convertible is virtually as good as any coupe or saloon. Thanks to the stiffened chassis and body, there's also very little vibration even when cornering at speed.
There are three BMW trim levels to choose from - ES, SE and M Sport - and even the most basic 1 Series has a good level of equipment, including stability control and air conditioning. SE trim also includes a multi-function steering wheel and automatic parking sensors, while M Sports trim enhancement are largely cosmetic.
The electric roof of the 1 Series can be lowered or raised efficiently when driving at up to 30mph and when down, it is neatly stored under a tonneau cover.
