Used BMW iX information
Powertrains
As an electric-only model, the powertrain lineup is fairly straightforward when searching for a used BMW iX, with only three choices available:
- xDrive40: 321bhp, 0 to 60mph in 6.1 seconds and an all-electric range of up to 264 miles WLTP.
- xDrive50: 516bhp, 0 to 60mph in 4.6 seconds and an all-electric range of up to 382 miles WLTP.
- M60: 610bhp, 0 to 60mph in 3.8 seconds and an all-electric range of up to 348 miles WLTP.
The entry-level xDrive40 model is a solid choice as is, but it's best reserved for those that don't often venture further afield due to its lower EV range. Opt for an example with the uprated xDrive50 powertrain and things feel a little more dialled in, with more performance in hand when needed, while the range-topping M60 will appeal to those that want both EV economy blended with M Performance.
All used iX models will come with the famed xDrive all-wheel drive system as standard, making it more than capable of handling tricky conditions with ease.
Practicality
Thanks to its large dimensions, the BMW iX proves to be a very practical car, with plenty of interior space for all on board. Rear passengers will benefit from added leg room when compared to traditionally-powered alternatives too, as there's no transmission tunnel for the central passenger to straddle.
While you'll be hard-pushed to find a more spacious option in terms of cabin space, the BMW iX does sacrifice some boot space in its quest for superior comfort. With a boot space of 500 litres, it's still respectably sized, but rivals such as the Tesla Model Y (854 litres) have the upper hand in this department. Folding down the rear seats in the iX does unlock further carrying capabilities, with a cavernous 1,750 litres to play with.
Away from interior space, the BMW iX is a well-rounded car that's practical enough for the lives of most, and if you plan on towing additional loads, it offers a braked towing capacity of up to 2,500kg. Make sure to check the specification of the exact used iX you're looking at though, as xDrive40 variants offer a slightly lower, yet still impressive, 2,100kg braked towing capacity.
Safety
As BMW's flagship electric SUV, it comes as no surprise to learn that the iX earned the full five-star safety rating when it went through Euro NCAP's rigorous crash test, scoring 91% for adult occupant protection and 87% for child passenger protection. This puts it at the top of its class in terms of safety, giving you extra peace of mind while out on the road.
BMW has implemented what it calls an 'integrated safety concept' which includes the likes of interactive airbags, coordinated restraint systems, highly resilient support structures and precisely designed deformation zones that all help in keeping you safe in the event of a collision.
There's a range of active safety technology available too, with attention assist, lane departure warning and speed limit recognition all coming as standard, while higher spec models will offer additional features such as the Driving Assistant Professional Package that includes steering and lane guidance assistance.
Technology
BMW models are often trailblazers when it comes to new technology and the iX certainly fits this mould. There's a heap of advanced technology to be found when searching for a used iX, with a variety of optional extras available when new, so be sure to confirm which gadgets the used example you're looking at has.
Entry-level 'Sport' variants come well-equipped as is, with LED headlights, a large 'Live Cockpit' infotainment system with navigation, and heated front seats coming as standard. Move up the range to 'M Sport' or 'M' models, and you'll benefit from the introduction of sportier aesthetics and features such as enhanced parking assist and an interior camera.
Notable extras to look out for when looking for a used iX include the 'Technology Plus Pack' that features an upgraded Bowers & Wilkins surround sound system and the 'Comfort Plus Pack' which introduces a massage function to the front seats and gives rear passengers the luxury of heated seats, too.
Used BMW iX FAQ's
How much does it cost to charge a BMW iX in the UK?
How much it costs to charge a BMW iX will depend on the type of electric charger or provider you use. Charging the car from home will be the most cost-effective option, as you're generally charged better rates than those found at public charging stations. If you do need to charge on the go, then you'll have access to an extensive charging network that can be found through the vehicle's infotainment system or a variety of smartphone apps.
Recharging an iX both at home and in public often works out to be significantly less than the costs of refuelling a petrol or diesel equivalent.
How long does it take to charge a BMW iX?
The time it takes to recharge your BMW iX will depend on the type and speed of the charger you use. When charging at an ultra-fast 150kW public charging station, you can replenish your battery from 20% to 80% in approximately 30 minutes. Home charging will typically take longer and is best done overnight - a dedicated 7kW wall box will take your battery from empty to full in approximately 11 hours.
Is the BMW iX a 7-seater?
Unfortunately not. The BMW iX only offers five seats. If you're looking for an all-electric 7-seater, you may want to consider the likes of the Mercedes-Benz EQB or Tesla Model X.
Is the BMW iX comfortable?
Yes, the BMW iX excels in the area of comfort thanks to its impressive build quality and spacious cabin.
Does the BMW iX have self-driving capability?
Used BMW iX models come equipped with level 2 autonomous driving systems, which means that the car can automatically assist you with various tasks such as accelerating, steering and braking.
What is the difference between the BMW iX and iX1?
The main difference between the BMW iX and the iX1 is related to its size. The iX is the larger of the two and comes with plenty of space for all, while the iX1 is a more compact family SUV option. Both cars come with an electric-only powertrain lineup, but as BMW's flagship electric model, the iX comes with more advanced technology.
How big is the BMW iX?
The BMW iX is a rather big car and resides within the large SUV segment. With overall dimensions of 4,953/1,967/1,695mm (length/width/height), it competes with the likes of the Jaguar I-PACE and Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV.
