Why buy a used BMW iX3?

The BMW iX3 is a core model within BMW's ever-expanding all-electric line-up, offering stylish looks and a build quality that many rivals find hard to beat. Merging traditional SUV looks with an emissions-free powertrain, the iX3 has quickly become a popular model on the used market amongst many.

Used BMW iX3 information

Powertrains

As an electric-only model, the powertrain lineup is as straightforward as it comes when searching for a used BMW iX3, with only one option available:

  • 80kWh: 282bhp, 0 to 60mph in 6.8 seconds, and an all-electric range of up to 282 miles WLTP.

This powertrain is an impressive performer, delivering a typical BMW driving experience that manages to keep you engaged despite its practical dimensions. The German brand has decided to do without a four-wheel drive option, too. While this may have proved useful in the trickiest of conditions, the majority of used buyers will have no requirement for 4x4 technology and will be more than impressed by the rear-wheel drive setup on offer.

All used BMW iX3 examples will come with an automatic gearbox as well as the intelligent eDrive system which combines a high-voltage lithium-ion battery, an electric motor and an intelligent energy management system to offer the most efficient means of driving.

Practicality

Much like the traditionally-powered X3, the iX3 offers a well-balanced design between practicality and premium luxury. All on-board will benefit from plenty of head and legroom as well as plenty of handy storage compartments for their usual bits and pieces. All models come with a panoramic roof as standard to make the cabin feel even more spacious.

The luxury offering found in the cabin does little to eat into the overall practicality. With a 510-litre boot on offer, the iX3 does offer slightly less room than the standard X3 (550 litres), but it's more than you'll find in the plug-in hybrid variant (450 litres). The iX3's boot space should be more than enough for the daily lives of most, but for times when you do need the extra space, you're able to drop the rear seats to open up a maximum capacity of 1,560 litres.

If you plan on towing additional loads, the iX3 can manage up to 750kg of braked towing capacity, too. A towbar was an optional extra when new though, so ensure the used vehicle you're looking at has one fitted if you plan on towing.

Safety

BMW has ensured that used iX3 models are well-equipped in the department of safety, featuring a range of advanced active and passive equipment to keep you well-protected while on the road.

Standard safety technology includes the likes of park assist and the brand's well-regarded Driving Assistant Professional package, which includes features such as adaptive cruise control, active collision avoidance and front cross-traffic warning. Top-of-the-range 'M Sport Pro' variants add further safety features including the upgraded Parking Assistance Plus package which adds additional cameras to give you a better view of what's around you.

While the iX3 hasn't technically been tested itself, the regular X3 achieved a full five-star Euro NCAP safety rating which is transferrable to the iX3 due to its similar design.

Technology

BMW models are well-known for offering the latest in advanced technology and the iX3 continues this trend. Much of its equipment comes as standard, but there was a variety of additional packs/gadgets when new, so double-check the specification of any models you're considering when searching the used market.

The iX3 range starts with the entry-level 'M Sport' trim which comes with features such as adaptive LED headlights, BWM Live Cockpit Professional and a heat pump for enhanced efficiency. 'M Sport Plus' models introduce additional equipment such as a head-up display as well as minor changes to the vehicle's looks, but will typically come at a premium.

BMW iX3 generations

Having only been introduced in 2020, there is currently only one generation of the BMW iX3 available on the used market. Based on the uber-popular X3 SUV, BMW introduced the iX3 as part of its push towards electric mobility, implementing subtle aesthetic changes to set it apart from its traditionally-powered siblings.

As a crossover SUV, the iX3 joined the smaller i3 hatchback in the brand's 'i' all-electric range, proving to be appealing enough to draw attention away from some of BMW's other popular models. Despite fierce competition arising in this segment, the first-generation iX3 is still one of the most popular all-electric SUVs available, with plenty of great examples being available when buying used.

Used BMW iX3 FAQ's

How long does it take for an iX3 to recharge?

The time it takes to recharge your BMW iX3 will depend on the type and speed of the charger you use. When charging at an ultra-fast 150kW public charging station, you can replenish your battery from 20% to 80% in approximately 20 minutes. Home charging will typically take longer and is best done overnight - a dedicated 7kW wall box will take your battery from empty to full in approximately 12 hours.

What's the difference between the BMW iX3 and iX?

The main difference between the BMW iX3 and the iX is related to their sizes. The iX is the larger of the two and comes with plenty of space for all, while the iX3 is a slightly more compact option. The iX3 also features a more traditional SUV design, while the iX offers a futuristic design that splits opinions.

Is the iX3 a hybrid?

No, the BMW iX3 is an all-electric model only, allowing you to benefit from a zero-emissions form of driving.

Can I charge a BMW iX3 at a Tesla supercharger?

Unfortunately, BMW iX3 models cannot typically use the Tesla Supercharger network. However, some supercharger stations are part of a pilot scheme that allow you to charge non-Tesla vehicles and there is a plethora of public charging stations that can be used to recharge your iX3, too.

Is the BMW iX3 four-wheel drive?

No, the BMW iX3 comes with rear-wheel drive only, offering a driving experience that's long been associated with BMW.

Can the BMW iX3 park itself?

Yes, equipped with BMW's Parking Assistant system as standard, all used BMW iX3 models have the ability to park themselves. The system uses sensors and cameras to measure potential car parking spaces before taking over the controls to safely park the vehicle once prompted to do so.

Is the iX3 good in snow?

Equipped with a range of advanced technology, the BMW iX3 is competent when it comes to driving in tricky conditions like snow. However, with no four-wheel drive option, you may want to consider some alternatives if you regularly face heavy snow.
