To add more options to its premium SUV lineup, BMW released the X2 in 2018. It was one of the smallest models, comparable in size to the X1. Since then, BMW has debuted a second-generation X2 with a bolder style and enhanced tech features, creating the perfect blend of versatility, performance and luxury.

Engines and transmissions
The X2 has been available in diesel and petrol engines, paired to an automatic or a manual gearbox and front- and four-wheel drive.
Petrol- sDrive20i uses a 1.5-litre turbocharged three-cylinder with mild hybrid tech to output 167bhp, resulting in a 0-62mph time of 8.3 seconds and an efficiency rating of 48.7mpg.
- M35i upgrades to a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder to increase the output to 295bhp, reducing the 0-62mph time to 5.4 seconds with an efficiency rating of 36.7mpg.
- Older 1.5-litre 18i generates 138bhp and offers a fuel economy rating of up to 45.6mpg, while the 2.0-litre xDrive20i produces up to 189bhp and 37.7mpg.
- Earlier PHEV generated 216bhp and had a fuel economy rating of up to 38.7mpg.
- Older 18d creates 147bhp, achieving a fuel economy rating of up to 56.5mpg.
- A 20d was also available with an increased output of 187bhp but a slightly reduced fuel economy rating of 51.4mpg.
Practicality
The sloping roofline cuts the X2 interior space down slightly from the X1, but it's still a practical model that offers a lot of comfort.
Interior space- Front seats are supportive and adjustable, with the steering wheel also offering adjustments.
- Two adults fit comfortably in the back seat with a child in the middle.
- ISOFIX mounting points for child seats are accessed on the outer rear seats.
- 560-litre boot available in the M35i (515 litres in the 20i because of the mild hybrid equipment), both of which are much larger than the Mercedes-Benz GLA.
- 40:20:40 split rear seats create more boot space for larger items.
- Boot floor locks against the rear seats and a 12V socket is included.
Safety
- 2015 Euro NCAP rating was a perfect five stars.
- 90% rating given for adult occupant and 87% for child occupant.
- Standard kit includes autonomous emergency braking system.
Technology
- Dual displays sit under glass – a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system and a 10.7-inch digital instrument panel.
- Satnav system is easy to view and use.
- Connectivity comes in various forms, including Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, a Wi-Fi hotspot, 4G connectivity and Bluetooth.
BMW X2 generations
Second Generation (2023 to Present)
Continuing to share its platform with the X1, the new X2 offered a sportier upgrade with a wider grille design and an optional LED strip. The front style depended upon the model chosen, with the option for adaptive LED headlights and two different bumpers that included air scoops for better engine cooling. The LED taillight design ensured that the X2 looked wider than before from the rear, but the SUV was also made bigger to add more interior space.
Inside the cabin, new technology was added. Additionally, BMW upgraded the powertrain choices, ensuring that drivers had access to plenty of power or efficiency, depending on their needs.

The X2 was released and shared its platform with the MINI Countryman and X1. However, it was designed as a Sports Active Coupé, modelled after the X1, which shared its similar size. Despite sharing its platform, the X2 didn't have a lot of the same styling features as the X1. In fact, it was described as being a hatchback with a high ground clearance.
BMW gave drivers access to a variety of engines. There were also various gearboxes and drivetrains to choose from.
