The Citroen C4 first appeared in 2004 as an affordable hatchback model. Since its introduction, Citroen has released three generations and several facelifts, along with C4-inspired models, such as the C4 Cactus, C4 Picasso and C4 SpaceTourer. Each new generation and update has brought more efficient engines, refreshed styling and a new look, with the C4 gradually turning from a standard hatchback model into a crossover.

Engines and transmissions
Citroen has made the C4 with petrol, hybrid and diesel engines, along with the e-C4, which is an all-electric variant. While there's an option between a manual and an automatic transmission, all C4 models include front-wheel drive.
Petrol- PureTech 100 1.2-litre engine produces 99bhp and returns 54.6mpg.
- PureTech 130 increases the output to 129bhp, but retains the similar efficiency rating of up to 54.7mpg.
- Hybrid e-DCS6 (self-charging) creates a combined 134bhp and increases the efficiency to 62.1mpg.
- Earlier models can be found with a 108bhp or 129bhp 1.5-litre diesel engine.
- Fuel economy is up to 69mpg, depending on the configuration.
- Older generations had a 98bhp 1.6-litre BlueHDI with a fuel economy rating of 78mpg and even a 2.0-litre that produced 147bhp, but with a slightly lower fuel economy of up to 74mpg.
Practicality
The newer C4 models are more practical than ever, with increased interior space and high-tech equipment.
Interior space- Front seats offer enough headroom and legroom for the tallest passengers.
- Outer rear seats are suitable for adults, but the middle seat is best suited for a child.
- ISOFIX mounting points can secure child seats in the back row.
- 380-litre boot is similar to the VW Golf.
- Split-folding rear seats create 1,280 litres of space for larger items.
- Adjustable boot floor allows more carrying capacity and can reduce the load lip.
- First two generations featured a hatchback design.
- Third generation added more ground clearance and became a crossover.
Safety
- 2021 Euro NCAP rating was four out of five stars.
- Both adult and child occupant ratings are at least 80%.
- Standard kit includes an array of airbags, traffic sign recognition, cruise control and lane departure warning.
Technology
- Large 10.0-inch infotainment touchscreen features clear graphics.
- Smartphone connectivity through Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
- Digital driver's display replaces the older analogue dials.
Citroen C4 generations
Third Generation (2020 to Present)
The C4 moved away from its previous hatchback design to take on the form of a crossover. It was similar to the C3 Aircross and C5 Aircross, but was simply named the C4. The higher ground clearance, SUV styling and updated shape made it look completely different from the previous generations.
Citroen also added new headlights to match the rest of the lineup and daytime running lights between the bonnet and headlamps. Technology was upgraded in the cabin, moving towards digital equipment instead of knobs and buttons. There were also some important upgrades made to the powertrain.

Second Generation (2011 to 2019)
The second-generation C4 was unveiled in 2010, sharing a platform with the Peugeot 307. This compact hatchback model had a more conservative design than the original, showcasing a rounded shape. Its front grille featured the double-chevron Citroen logo, and it was extended out to the sides complete with chrome lines. The headlight design was more angular, while the turn signals were situated slightly lower.
The new designs continued in the cabin with a new conventional instrument cluster and some upgraded kit options. Citroen also expanded the powertrain selection, giving drivers more choices.
