One of the oldest motoring companies in Britain is Daimler. Among the first manufacturers of luxury cars, it has a long and interesting history that spans over a century. While the brand is all but defunct nowadays, there's still plenty of demand for its classic autos and they never fail to garner attention.
Daimler is one of the few motoring names to have been founded by a single person but spawned into two completely separate companies, one German and one British. The former became the giant Daimler AG which manufacturers Mercedes Benz cars among others, while the latter remained totally independent.
The British variant of Daimler was founded in 1896 and based in Coventry. It has had a close association with the Monarchy since 1898 and was at the cutting edge of innovation and engineering for much of its early history. Known as a producer of high quality limousines, cars like the Ten, Fifteen, Twenty Seven and Regency Hooper Empress were all fine examples of the company's work.
But the company also created a range of classic sporty roadsters such as the SP250. Its acquisition by Jaguar led to the Dart, Double-Six, XJ40 and Super V8 during the late 70s and early 80s. While earlier cars are certainly collector's items and showpieces, those from this period are popular for people who want something with a classic feel but are still in a condition to be driven.
Understandably rarer than other British motoring marques, there's still a good selection of second hand Daimler autos at Motors.co.uk. While it's possible to find some real bargains, popular models can still be quite pricey despite big sales discounts.
