Engines and transmissions

All of the latest generation of Fiat 500 models are equipped with a hybrid powertrain, with the choice of a manual or automatic gearbox. An all-electric model is also available, branded as the 500e.

Petrol
  • 1.0-litre hybrid powertrain in the 500 and 500c produces 70hp, a 0-62 mph time of 13.8 seconds, and a top speed of 104 mph.
  • The 500X has a punchier 130hp 1.5-litre engine, reaching 62mph in 9.4 seconds and a top speed of 120mph.
  • CO2 emissions range between 106-136 g/km, with a fuel economy rating between 44.1 and 54.3mpg, depending on the trim level.
Electric
  • Available either with a 24 or 42kWh battery with a range between 115 and 199 miles.
  • The 24kWh version has 95hp and a 0-62mph of 9.5 seconds.
  • The 42kWh version has 118hp and a 0-62mph of 9 seconds.

Practicality

The Fiat 500 is a small city car, so it's not going to have a huge amount of space, yet it remains comfortable.

Interior space
  • Adjustable front seats make it easier to get comfortable.
  • Cramped rear seats are better suited for two children.
  • ISOFIX anchor points are available in the back, but rear-facing seats fit tight.
Boot space
  • 185 litres of boot space in the rear.
  • Slanted boot lid reduces the height of the cargo area.
  • Available two-way 50:50 split-folding back seat allows for larger items to fit.
Bodystyles
  • 500 is a three-door hatchback.
  • 500c includes a convertible top.

Safety

  • Expired 2017 Euro NCAP rating only gives three stars.
  • Safety assist rating was only 27%.
  • Seven airbags are standard equipment.

Technology

  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity come as standard.
  • 7-inch HD touchscreen infotainment system has clear, crisp graphics.
  • Available 7-inch driver display gauge on top trims.

Different generations of used Fiat 500

Fiat 500e, Electric car, Parked

The original 500 nameplate dates back to the 1930s but was revived in 2007. Even though it's technically in its third generation now, the previous models were discontinued in 1975, so there's no comparison between the two. The latest generation includes an all-electric variant, known as the 500e.

Today's 500s have come in many variations, with a current hatchback and convertible model available. Fiat has further extended the lineup with a 500L MPV and 500X SUV.

Third Generation (2020 to 2024)

After 8 highly successful years on sale, the 500 underwent extensive revisions. The Uconnect multimedia infotainment system was brought in line with modern tech, and more safety kit was added. The dashboard looked very different overall, in fact, and Bluetooth, DAB sat nav and smartphone integration was included as standard on top-of-the-range Lounge models.

The exterior design remained extremely recognisable from before, but with re-shaped fog lights and redesigned headlamps, plus LED daytime running lights. The front end was also revised in with a new grille design and tweaked bumper/air intake. A revised taillight and chrome bumper trim at the rear completed the styling changes.

Second Generation (2008 to 2024)

The Fiat 500 was reborn after a more than 30 year absence from the market. Its retro design was based on the original 500, but was brought bang in line with modern trends. It struck a huge chord with buyers all over Europe, including here in the UK, where it was immediately extremely popular and has been ever since.
