The Ford Focus RS was first introduced in 2002 as the ultimate performance version of the Focus, sitting above the ST at the top of the range. Even though it has been offered through three generations and updates have been made each time, production has been sporadic with breaks in between. Ford discontinued the Focus RS lineup after the 2018 model year.

Used Ford Focus RS information
Engines and transmissions
Through the years, the petrol engine has been upgraded to create more power. A six-speed manual is used to transfer power to all four wheels, though older models have a front-wheel drive platform.
Petrol- 2.3-litre turbocharged EcoBoost creates 345bhp, helping it reach 60mph in 4.5 seconds.
- Older models used an upgraded 2.5-litre from the ST that makes 300bhp.
- With the boosted performance, this model hit 0-60mph in 5.7 seconds and had a top speed of 163mph.
Practicality
Even though the Ford Focus RS is centred on performance, it is also quite practical, with an intense focus on driver comfort.
Interior space- With the same amount of room as the regular Focus lineup, all passengers can be comfortable.
- Spacious rear seats make room for adults.
- Rear ISOFIX points to secure child seats.
- 260-litre boot behind the rear seats is smaller than the rest of the lineup because of the all-wheel drive equipment.
- With the rear seats folded down, the space opens up to 1,045 litres.
- Rear hatchback design ensures that loading and unloading are easier.
Safety
- Euro NCAP gave Ford Focus models a five-star rating in 2018.
- Child occupant received the highest rating at 87%, with adult occupant reaching 85%.
- Standard safety kit includes various airbags and lane assist system.
Technology
- Large 8-inch touchscreen display located on centre stack for easy access.
- Nine-speaker Sony sound system is a major upgrade from the standard Focus lineup.
- SYNC 3 system includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity.
Ford Focus RS generations
Third Generation (2016 to 2018)
The new Focus RS came back with a fierce look that included some bigger bumpers and massive air vents. A wing was added to the back, mounted to the top of the liftgate to provide better aesthetics and more aerodynamic properties.
The all-wheel drive system was designed for performance. It featured twin electronically controlled clutch packs on either side that helped manage how much torque was sent to the individual wheels. This specially tuned AWD system delivers better grip for improved handling.

Used Ford Focus RS FAQ's
Which are the most popular trim levels?
The RS is the trim level for the Ford Focus models, but there have been special editions available, such as the RS Edition, RS Red Edition and RS Heritage Edition. For the most part, the standard RS is the most popular trim, but if you can find a special edition, then you'll get unique styling and features included.
What optional extras should I look out for?
Customers should look out for the rear parking sensors and cruise control functionality for upgrades. We also recommend the heated steering wheel for comfort and the matte black roof and the Recaro seats with blue bolsters for a sportier appearance.
Is there a hybrid version of the Ford Focus RS?
Ford didn't make a hybrid variant of the Focus RS. However, the standard Focus lineup has been offered with a mild hybrid powertrain that helps to boost efficiency. For now, the Focus RS has only been available with a petrol engine.
Is the Ford Focus RS available as an automatic?
No, the Ford Focus RS has never been sold with any automatic gearbox options, so there are none on the used market. All models were equipped with a manual transmission, for maximum driver enjoyment.
Is there a four-wheel drive version available?
The most recent Focus RS lineup was made with standard four-wheel drive, increasing traction and improving handling.
