Engines and transmissions

Ford has several self-charging mild-hybrid powertrain offerings for maximum efficiency, all equipped with front-wheel drive. There's an option between a 6-speed manual and 7-speed automatic transmission.

Petrol
  • 125bhp 1.0-litre EcoBoost three-cylinder provides the most efficient ride, earning 52.3 mpg.
  • Optional uprated 155bhp 1.0-litre engine hits 62 mph in 8.7 seconds.
  • Sporty 200bhp ST version gets to 62 mph in 6.7 seconds and earns a rating of 42.8 mpg.

Practicality

he compact design of the Puma allows for urban navigation, but it can be slightly cramped in the cabin, though not nearly as much as it looks from the outside.

Interior space
  • Sporty models earn front bucket seats, which cut down on comfort.
  • Middle-rear seat is best reserved for a child due to low roof.
  • ISOFIX anchors are found in the outer two rear seats, but it can become cramped.
Boot space
  • 456-litre boot space is very decent and compares well to other models in this segment.
  • Space includes a 12-volt socket, luggage hooks and tie-downs.
  • Split-folding rear seats allow access to 1,216 litres of room.
  • Megabox design provides 80 litres of storage under the boot floor.

Safety

  • Euro NCAP rating is only four stars.
  • Child passenger occupancy rating reaches 84%.
  • Standard safety kit includes adaptive cruise control and lane departure warning.

Technology

  • SYNC infotainment system touchscreen has been improved and updated.
  • Available 12.3-inch digital gauge display keeps drivers informed.
  • FordPass phone app allows for better connectivity.

Ford Puma video review

Different generations of used Ford Puma

The Ford Puma has been part of two different styles, with the newest showcasing a compact crossover design. This version went on sale in 2019, while the original sports coupé was available in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Both are completely different models, with the current generation prioritising practicality, efficiency and everyday usability.

First Generation (1998-2002)

The original Puma design started as the Lynx concept back in 1996 and went into production as a 1998 model year Puma. While the name was different, the shape and general appeal of both were the same. It was built on a stretched-out Fiesta wheelbase and had a variety of petrol engines.

Styling included swept-back headlights, similar to what would be seen in a cat's eyes, and it had a broad air intake in the lower bumper to cool down the engine. Sport bucket seats let drivers feel like they were driving down the track, but interior space was limited.

Second Generation (2019 to 2024)

While the name is old, the new crossover seeks to please a new market. With its mild-hybrid configuration, Ford hopes to work towards lowering the emissions outputs of its range. It was released with a variety of powertrain offerings, so there's some customisation available.

Inside the cabin, space is slightly limited, but it's not much different from other crossovers of this size. Ford sprinkled several high-tech features throughout the cabin to ensure that the ride never becomes mundane.

Used Ford Puma FAQ's

What is a Ford Puma equivalent to?

The newer crossover offered by Ford is based on the Fiesta supermini. It's a similar design to the Toyota Yaris Cross, which uses Yaris underpinnings. Other models include the Nissan Juke, Seat Arona, Peugeot 2008 and Skoda Kamiq.

Is a Ford Puma bigger than a Focus?

The Ford Focus hatchback is nearly 20 cm longer than the Ford Puma, making it slightly bigger. It's also 8.5 cm lower than the Puma, losing 3.1 cm of ground clearance, but the Focus also has a bigger boot space.

Is Ford still making the Puma?

Yes, Ford began production of the Puma crossover in 2019. In the future, Ford plans to release an electric Puma model, possibly sometime in 2024, which should go head-to-head against the Peugeot e-2008 and the Mini Aceman (also soon to be released).

Is the Ford Puma a fast car?

The majority of the lineup isn't considered fast, with 0-62 mph times of around 9 seconds or higher. However, the ST has a 1.5-litre turbocharged engine to pump out 200-horsepower, giving it a 0-62 mph time of 6.7 seconds.

Is the Ford Puma a good family car?

Yes, the Puma has a spacious interior and lots of practicality that is useful for families, including a 456-litre boot and 60/40 split folding rear seats. It's also a very safe vehicle having achieved four out of five stars in the latest round of Euro NCAP testing.

Is the Ford Puma affordable?

The Puma offers affordability both in terms of buying and running costs. Fuel Economy is great, and servicing and repairs costs a low, too.

Is the Puma available as a four-wheel drive?

No, there are no four-wheel drive versions of the Puma.
