Engines and transmissions

Most recent models only come with a self-charging petrol hybrid configuration, but previously there were petrol and diesel powertrains paired with a manual or an automatic gearbox and front- or all-wheel drive.

Petrol
  • Newer 2.5 Duratec self-charging hybrid configuration produces 187bhp, with a 0-60mph time of 9.5 seconds with fuel economy of up to 44mpg.
  • Older 1.5-litre EcoBoost petrol engines can also be found on the used market, offering 163bhp and around 35mpg on average.
  • First-generation Titanium X Sport provides the highest-performing 2.0-litre petrol engine with 236bhp, but this is costlier to run with mpg in the low 30s.
Diesel
  • Diesel S-MAX models are by far the most populous option on the used market thanks to their improved fuel economy over petrol models
  • Most recent 2.0-litre EcoBlue diesel offers plenty of performance thanks to 187bhp, but also great fuel economy of up to 45mpg.
  • Both 1.6-litre and 2.2-litre diesels of the 1st generation S-MAX can be found on the used market

Practicality

As an MPV, there's a huge amount of space inside the S-MAX, making it a top choice as a family vehicle.

Interior space
  • 2-3-2 layout creates seating for seven people, with optional five-passenger models available.
  • High-mounted seating provides a good view.
  • Available panoramic glass roof creates more space.
  • Third row is best suited for children.
Boot space
  • 285-litre boot with all seven seats in place, expanding to 700 litres without the back row.
  • Keeping only the two front seats with the Easy Fold system allows for 2,020 litres of load area.
  • Available hands-free tailgate provides easy access to the boot.

Safety

  • Expired 2015 Euro NCAP rating gave the MPV five stars.
  • Both adult and child occupant ratings are 87%.
  • Standard safety kit includes numerous airbags, tyre pressure monitoring and the MyKey system.

Technology

  • 10-inch digital instrument cluster helps the driver stay informed.
  • 8-inch touchscreen display in the centre stack to use with the SYNC infotainment system.
  • Available ambient lighting helps to personalise the space.

Ford S-Max video review

Different generations of used Ford S-Max

The Ford S-MAX was introduced in 2006 to fit between the compact C-MAX MPV and the larger Galaxy. With seven-passenger seating, it became an instant success with families and even went on to win several awards. Now in its second generation, Ford has continued to modernise and upgrade the S-MAX over time, even releasing a luxury Vignale version in 2015.

Second Generation (2015 to 2014)

Ford built the second-generation S-MAX on the Mondeo platform and gave it an updated front shape with a hexagonal grille, swept-back headlights and LED daytime running lamps. A second cooling area was added to the lower bumper and a larger windscreen was fitted to the front for improved visibility. The independent suspension provided comfort for everyone in the cabin, plus improved driving dynamics. The engine lineup was revised with new EcoBoost petrol and TDCi diesel units.

A 2020 update brought more advanced safety technology to the S-MAX. It received a redesigned front end, with unique fog lights and a restyled upper grille. Inside the cabin, the seating was upgraded to be more comfortable and was actually certified by independent tests to be better for passengers' backs.

First Generation (2006 to 2014)

The S-MAX was originally introduced as a sportier alternative to the full-size Galaxy people carrier. Its original design combined curved lines with narrow, sharp edges and flared wheel arches. Faux extracting vents were placed at the front to give it a more aggressive look.

During a 2010 redesign, Ford enhanced the front grille and bumper. The company also added new LED lights and a unique rear tailgate that appealed to enthusiasts.

Used Ford S-Max FAQ's

Which is the most popular engine in the Ford S-MAX?

The diesel engines have been the most popular by far, in particular the 2.0-litre EcoBlue diesel. Consumers appreciate the balance of efficiency and power that these engines offer. While there are some petrol or self-charging hybrid engines on the used market, they are more difficult to find.

Which are the most popular trim levels?

New S-MAX models are found in three trims: Titanium, ST-Line and Vignale. The Titanium trim is the most popular to buy as a used car due to its lower price and standard cruise control.

What optional extras should I look out for?

Customers should look out for the various types of wheel designs that make the S-MAX appear more stylish. The vehicle can also be equipped with sleek silver roof rails and adaptive LED headlights. Customers should also look out for models with a premium sound system for enhanced music clarity.

Is the Ford S-MAX a good family car?

Yes, with seating available for seven people, the S-MAX has proven to be a great choice of vehicle for families. The seating can be altered, allowing for more boot space if cargo needs to be loaded. Used models can also be found at reasonable prices, helping families to stick to a budget.

Is there a hybrid version of the Ford S-MAX?

Yes, with the newest lineup, Ford offers a self-charging hybrid configuration of the S-MAX. This is designed to increase fuel efficiency and offer a smooth driving experience.

Is the Ford S-MAX available as an automatic?

Ford has offered both manual and automatic gearboxes with the S-MAX models. With used models, the manual gearbox is more popular, but it's not hard to find the automatic variants, though they may cost a bit more to buy.

Is there a four-wheel drive version available?

Ford did offer all-wheel drive on select S-MAX models, although they are rarer on the used market. However, the majority of the MPVs came equipped with front-wheel drive, which is what most vehicles in this segment have.
