As far as sheer size and presence go, no cars can complete with the might of Hummer. Typically American in stature, these gigantic motors are akin to tanks and dominate every inch of the road. While the brand is now defunct, the Hummer legend won't be forgotten any time soon.
The Hummer brand was born 1992 out of a desire for road going version of the military grade Humvee. AM General released the H1 on the stunned motoring industry and had some initial success as it was seen as a novelty by the elite. General Motors purchased Hummer in 1999 and followed up with the H2 and H3 which were softened down but nonetheless monstrous versions of the original.
While the Hummer was popular in export markets and in the US, the global economic crisis of 2008 made it increasingly difficult to justify and ultimately demand dwindled due to the massive running costs. By 2010 the brand had ceased all production and was shut down, ending a comparatively short but colossal legacy.
As far as SUVs go, Hummers are great for people who want something oversized and don't care about fuel costs, damage to the environment or insurance. While these main criticisms were laid at the door of every model, the fact remains that the H1, H2 and H3 were epic in proportion.
While later versions were relatively docile, the H1 was anything but. Perfect for off roading, it didn't hold anything back and instead of driving over difficult terrain simply went straight through it. With a wealth of modifications that could arm it to the teeth for any eventuality, it's one of the strongest contenders to the 4x4 throne.
it's no secret that Hummers aren't cheap to buy, but at Motors.co.uk there's an array of used versions available for a fraction of the cost. Getting a second hand Hummer gives you all the power and posture for less of the price thanks to big discounts, but you'll have to keep your eyes open as sales availability is relatively limited.
Hummers are super-sized in every way and are unique in what they offer. Gigantic is an understatement, but one thing that is for sure is that you'll never forget where you've parked in a busy lot!
