Originally introduced in 2008, the Hyundai i20 looked very similar to many rivals in the segment, and offered no-frills and great value motoring. Since its introduction, Hyundai has continued to expand and upgrade its lineup through three generations, each bringing extra style and interior technology.

Engines and transmissions
There are only mild-hybrid petrol engines in the newer i20 models. Previous generation came with both diesel and petrol engine options.
Petrol- 98bhp 1.0-litre engine produces a maximum of 62.7mpg.
- N Line models push out 118bhp to deliver 53.3mpg.
- N boosts power to 204bhp from the 1.6-litre turbo GDi.
- Earlier models included a range of engine sizes between 1.0 and 1.4-litres, that varied between 73 and 98bhp.
- Earlier generation models included diesel powertrains options such as a 1.1-litre engine with 73bhp, delivering around 70mpg, or up to 88mpg if you go for the super-efficient Blue Drive version.
- SE and Premium models could come with a 1.4-litre engine, 88bhp capable of up to 68mpg.
Practicality
Navigating city streets is enjoyable with the i20, and the interior space is still decent despite the supermini proportions.
Interior space- Adjustable driver's seat is standard, allowing you to get comfortable easily.
- More rear space than rival small hatchbacks, allowing passengers to stretch.
- ISOFIX mounts secured to outer rear seats for child safety.
- 352-litre boot is comparable to the VW Polo.
- 60:40 rear split seats open the boot to 1,165 litres.
- Adjustable boot floor makes storage easier.

- Child occupant rating is 82%.
- Standard safety kit includes six airbags, forward collision avoidance and automatic emergency braking, as well as lane keep assist for premium trims.

- Various stereo systems allow for premium sound quality.
Hyundai i20 generations
Third Generation (2020 to Present)
Unveiled in 2020, the third-generation i20 was filled with more technological features, such as dual 10.25-inch displays. The dimensions also changed, making the new models longer, wider and lower for a sportier stance while increasing practicality. Hyundai also added safety features such as front collision assist and pedestrian detection.
A 2023 refresh didn't bring significant changes, but the hatchback has new wing-shaped edges and side scoops, even though the profile stayed the same. Optional LED interior lights and a premium Bose sound system were also offered.

Used Hyundai i20 FAQ's
What is the Hyundai GDi engine?
GDi stands for 'gasoline direct injection', a type of fuel injection system used in some Hyundai engines. This technology allows for decent power but retains good fuel efficiency and low emissions.
What is the difference between the i10, i20, i30 and i40?
Hyundai labels some of their cars by size, and this is the case for the i-family vehicles. The i10 is the smallest of the range, and the i40, considered a mid-size car, is the biggest. The i20 is slightly bigger than the i10 and significantly smaller than the i30.
What are the most popular trim levels?
The Advance is today's base model. From new, Hyundai also offers the Premium and Ultimate trims, each offering slightly different tech and features. Today's most performance-enhanced model is the i20 N.
Which is the most popular engine in the Hyundai i20?
Across the new standard i20 lineup, there's a 1.0-litre mild hybrid engine that combines power with efficiency. It's also the most cost-effective option. Higher-powered engines are available with the N and N Line, but efficiency tends to drop.
Is the Hyundai i20 a good family car?
There is a good amount of room inside the i20. The designers did a great job of maximising the use of available space to ensure that everyone would be comfortable, making it a top choice for families living in busy, urban environments.
Is there a plug-in hybrid version of the Hyundai i20?
At this time, Hyundai hasn't yet produced a plug-in variant of the i20. However, the newest models have a mild hybrid configuration.
Is the Hyundai i20 available as an automatic?
Yes, depending on the trim level and powertrain configuration, 7-speed dual-clutch automatic versions can be found on the used market. The newest i20 models come standard with a 6-speed manual transmission.
