Engines and transmissions

Hyundai built the i30 with petrol, diesel and mild hybrid engines, paired with a manual or an automatic transmission and standard front-wheel drive.

Petrol
  • 1.0-litre T-GDi uses 48V mild-hybrid tech to create 118bhp for a 0-62mph time of 11.4 seconds, and it has the best petrol rating of 54.3mpg.
  • 1.4-litre T-GDi generates 138bhp and has a 44.1mpg fuel economy rating.
  • 1.5T increases the output to 156bhp, cutting the 0-62mph time to 8.6 seconds, but it reduces the efficiency to 44.8mpg.
  • i30 N models have a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine that makes 271bhp for a 0-62mph time of just 5.9 seconds, and it is rated at around 34mpg.
Diesel
  • Older 1.6-litre generates 108bhp, 113bhp or 134bhp, and is the most efficient with a rating of up to 60.1mpg.

Practicality

The i30 hatchback has more than sufficient room for a growing family, and its cabin is supportive and well-connected.

Interior space
  • Front seats accommodate tall passengers with a generous amount of headroom and legroom.
  • Three children fit perfectly in the back seat, but only two adults will be comfortable.
  • Wide-opening rear doors give way to the ISOFIX mounts for child seats.
Boot space
  • 395-litre boot is large for a compact hatchback.
  • Square-shaped boot makes it easy to hold bulky packages.
  • Rear seats fold down to make 1,301 litres of space for larger items.

Safety

  • 2017 Euro NCAP crash testing gave the i30 a perfect five-star rating.
  • Proving that the i30 is a safe vehicle, the adult occupant rating is 88%, with the child occupant at 84%.
  • Standard kit includes various airbags, automatic emergency braking, an emergency call system, lane departure warning, driver attention warning and lane-keeping assist.

Technology

  • Older 8.0-inch touchscreen display has been replaced with a 10.3-inch in mid-range models.
  • DAB radio, Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are part of the standard kit.
  • Available wireless charging pad keeps the phone fully charged while on the go.

Hyundai i30 video review

Different generations of used Hyundai i30

Hyundai saw the need for a stylish hatchback, so the company joined with a former BMW design executive to produce the i30 in 2007. It instantly became one of the best compact segment models of its time, gaining UK popularity and accolades. Well into its third generation at this point, the i30 continues to receive upgrades that keep it competitive and desirable for today's drivers.

Third Generation (2017 to 2012)

Hyundai had already appeared to perfect the design of the i30 by the time the third generation arrived. Aside from a larger glass area added to the third window behind the back doors and a redesigned available roof spoiler for some models, much of the styling remained the same. This new lineup received more modern tech and comfort features.

Several facelifts have occurred since its introduction. For example, a 2018 update revealed redesigned lines that appeared more elegant, while the 2020 refresh added a new bumper, giving the i30 a more striking look. A 2024 facelift upgraded the front grille and lower bumper, so that's why used i30s will look slightly different from one another, depending on when they were made.

Second Generation (2012 to 2017)

It wasn't long after the i30 was initially released that Hyundai decided to start a new generation for the city car. One of the most enjoyable aspects of this lineup was the comfortable suspension that gave the i30 great handling characteristics. There were also several powertrains to choose from, allowing for more power or efficiency, depending on the driver's wants and needs.

In terms of technology, this i30 was ahead of its time. Bluetooth connectivity, LED running lights and other top features were supplied as part of the standard kit. Its boot was also one of the largest in the segment, making the i30 a great choice for growing families.

First Generation (2007 to 2012)

Sharing a platform with the Kia Ceed, the i30 filled a need in the compact segment, and the hot hatch design was popular with enthusiasts. There were some elements that matched the Mazda 3 hatchback, especially in the rear, while the front looked similar to the Ford Focus. However, the grille was smaller than what was found on the similar Kia.

In the cabin, Hyundai offered a variety of dashboard and door panel colours, along with several different material options. There were also a few different powertrain options, allowing for more personalisation.

Used Hyundai i30 FAQ's

Which is the most popular engine in the Hyundai i30?

The petrol engines have been slightly more popular than the diesels, but probably only because they have been offered in greater numbers. The diesel engine is the most efficient, so this is worth looking for.

Which are the most popular model variants?

Various models have been offered over the years, including Active, SE, SE Nav, Style, N-Line and N. The SE tends to be the most popular, with several of its variants offering more features. For example, the SE Connect comes with air conditioning, a reversing camera and rear parking sensors.

What optional extras should I look out for?

Customers should look out for heated front seats, a heated steering wheel and dual-zone automatic climate control, which can add to the comfort inside the i30. There's also a digital driver's display and a wireless charging pad for customers who want more technology included.

Is the Hyundai i30 a good family car?

The i30 is a great choice for families. There is plenty of room for up to three children in the back seat, and it also has a decent amount of boot space for the segment and lots of standard kit.

Is there a hybrid version of the Hyundai i30?

Hyundai hasn't yet built a plug-in hybrid variant of the i30. However, some of the petrol engines include mild-hybrid technology to improve the efficiency.

Is the Hyundai i30 available as an automatic?

Yes, there have been powertrains offered with an automatic transmission. The majority of used i30 models have a manual gearbox, but it shouldn't be difficult to find a setup with an automatic.

Is there a four-wheel drive version available?

No, as a compact hatchback, Hyundai only built the i30 with front-wheel drive. Regardless of the engine chosen, the power is distributed to the front wheels only.
