South Korean carmaker, Hyundai, launched the estate variant of the i40 model at the Geneva Motor Show in 2011. A year later, after the wagon's introduction, Hyundai unveiled a new i40 with a saloon body style at the Barcelona Motor Show. The Hyundai i40 saloon became the most high-end car ever produced by the marque. Thanks to its robust appearance and powerful performance, it quickly earned its place in the family car sector. By 2014, all i40s came with a 1.7-litre CRDi four-cylinder diesel engine tuned at different efficiency levels. The lower-power 115PS trim offers a top speed of 124 mph and leisurely accelerates from 0-62 mph in 12.4 seconds, while the bigger 121PS achieve the same in 10.1 seconds and peaks at 126 mph.

Used Hyundai i40 FAQ's
How is the infotainment system in the Hyundai i40?
The lack of an infotainment system is a deal-breaker in the family car segment, and it seems Hyundai had a good understanding of this long before its competition. Despite being nearly a decade old, the Hyundai i40 still comes with DAB radio, Android Auto and Apple Car Play compatibility. However, the infotainment system only comes with SE Nav trims and above, but the base-level S still has an impressive 6-speaker sound system with Bluetooth connectivity.
Does the Hyundai i40 have a quality interior?
Although the i40 still retains its bold, stylish design from its prime years, it still looks a bit dated. It's especially evident with the S trim. The base-level range lacks a touchscreen display, leaving it with too many buttons on the dash. However, the cabin's interior is still very decent, with minimal plastics and a leather steering wheel in all trim levels. The higher-up trims get a heated steering wheel, heated front and rear seats, and a panoramic sunroof as a standard.
How does Hyundai i40 handle?
The Hyundai i40 outperforms most of its counterparts when it comes to the driving experience. It has an upgraded suspension, quicker engines and excellent grip, which makes up for its lighter steering. However, as it is a rather large car, you'll feel some body roll when cornering, and Sport mode feels a bit heavy.
Is the Hyundai i40 suited for long journeys?
The i40 might not attract attention when it comes to driving performance, but it turns heads when comfort becomes part of the discussion. The car comfortably seats 5 adults, providing excellent legroom and spacious headroom - a feature that made it popular with taxi drivers. Therefore, despite having slightly more road noise than some of the rivals, the i40 is still an excellent car for longer journeys.
Does the Hyundai i40 have ample storage space?
As you'd expect from a family-class car, the i40 offers plenty of cabin cubbies and interior storage. The Hyundai i40 saloon also has a sizeable 525-litre boot. However, the saloon has fixed seats, so those needing more space should opt for the i40 estate wagon. Even though the wagon's boot is only 28 litres more than the saloon, folding down the rear seats opens up an impressive 1,719 litres of luggage space.
Is the 1.7-litre engine in the Hyundai i40 efficient?
The 1.7-litre diesel engine comes tuned in two different trims; a 115PS and a 141PS. The 115's official fuel economy is 67.3 mpg, and the 141 delivers 65.7 mpg. For a car of its size, you'll get a good amount of miles from your tank. The efficiency slightly dips to 60 mpg if you go for the optional DCT gearbox with the 141PS engine.
What safety rating did the Hyundai i40 record?
The Hyundai i40 earned a maximum 5-star safety rating when the Euro NCAP crash-tested it in 2011. Though some safety metrics have advanced over the recent years, the Hyundai i40 is still considered a safe car. It comes with all the safety essentials, including 7 airbags, emergency braking warning lights, and traction and stability control. Newer i40 generations offer several advanced driver assistance systems, such as lane departure warning, driver alert monitoring, autonomous braking and road sign recognition technology.
