Why buy a used Hyundai IONIQ 5?

Instantly identifiable thanks to its distinctive retro looks and cutting-edge technology, the all-electric Hyundai IONIQ 5 is the South Korean brand's take on the emerging Crossover Utility Vehicle (CUV) segment. Introduced in 2021, it quickly became a popular choice, with many examples now available on the used market.

Used Hyundai IONIQ 5 information

Powertrains

Built on Hyundai's dedicated E-GMP platform, there are various all-electric powertrains to choose from when searching for a used IONIQ 5, including:

  • 58kWh: Available with up to 230bhp with a maximum range of 239 miles WLTP.
  • 72.6kWh (Long Range): Available with up to 300bhp with a maximum range of 299 miles WLTP.
  • 77.4kWh (Extra Long Range): Available with up to 316bhp with a maximum range of 303 miles WLTP.

Entry-level 58kWh models offer plenty of benefits in their own right but may require more planning on longer journeys due to a lower EV range. Long Range and Extra Long Range powertrains are better suited to those that travel further afield and offer the additional benefit of enhanced performance figures. Both rear-wheel and all-wheel drive variants can be found across all powertrains.

If it's maximum performance you're after, the Hyundai IONIQ 5 N was announced in 2023 too, so keep an eye out for those examples as they emerge on the used market.

Practicality

Despite their hatchback-like looks, used Hyundai IONIQ 5 models are surprisingly large and rival the likes of SUVs such as the Tesla Model Y and Kia EV6.

Boot space stands at 527 litres in its regular form, but drop the rear seats and you're able to make the most of 1,587 litres of space, which proves handy when carrying larger bits of luggage. With no engine to worry about, the 'frunk' can be used for smaller items too, with 57 litres of room.

In terms of driver and passenger space, there's very little to complain about. A minimalistic dashboard helps to make things feel very roomy up front, while rear passengers are blessed with more than sufficient head and legroom. A flat floor means the central passenger won't have to straddle a transmission tunnel either.

If you plan on towing additional equipment with your IONIQ 5, then you'll be glad to know it delivers in this department as well. It's not quite class-leading, but 77kWh examples can tow a respectable 1,600kg of braked weight (58kWh models can manage a reduced 750kg braked capacity).

Safety

As one of Hyundai's most recent models, the IONIQ 5 comes well-equipped with the latest in both passive and active safety technology.

Features such as autonomous emergency braking and parking distance warning come as standard, while higher spec models receive the likes of a surround-view monitor and level 2 autonomous driving systems that can assist with speed, distance and lane-changing tasks.

These advanced driver assistance systems paired with the IONIQ 5's intelligent overall design amount to a Euro NCAP safety rating of the full five stars, with adult and child occupation safety scores standing at 86% and 88% respectively.

Technology

It will come as no surprise to learn that the IONIQ 5 is equipped with a wide range of the latest cutting-edge technology.

Entry-level models come well-equipped as is and get the likes of Apple CarPlay/Android Auto connectivity, heated front seats and a 12.3-inch infotainment system with satellite navigation. Those looking for further gadgets will find the likes of used 'Ultimate' variants appealing, as they get tech such as a head-up display and an uprated sound system.

One of the IONIQ 5's most intelligent features is arguably its Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) system that allows you to use the car's energy to power and recharge electronic equipment using an onboard 220V plug. This can be used to recharge other electric vehicles too, if you ever have a friend that needs a helping hand.

Hyundai IONIQ 5 generations

Presented at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2019, the Hyundai IONIQ 5 became available in 2021 and is still in its first generation. With the design being heavily inspired by the original Hyundai Pony, the IONIQ 5 was introduced as an alternative model to other electric Hyundai models such as the Kona Electric and IONIQ Electric.

With the electric car segment growing by the day, there are plenty of other options to consider, but used IONIQ 5 models appeal to the masses thanks to a wide range of features and impressive everyday practicalities.

Used Hyundai IONIQ 5 FAQ's

How much does it cost to charge a used Hyundai IONIQ 5 in the UK?

How much it costs to charge a used Hyundai IONIQ 5 will depend on the type of electric charger or provider you use. Charging the car from home will be the most cost-effective option, as you're generally charged better rates than those found at public charging stations. If you do need to charge on the go, then you'll have access to an extensive charging network that can be found through the vehicle's infotainment system or a variety of smartphone apps. Recharging an IONIQ 5 both at home and in public often works out to be significantly less than the costs of refuelling a petrol or diesel equivalent.

How long does it take to charge a used Hyundai IONIQ 5?

The time it takes to recharge your used IONIQ 5 will depend on the type and speed of the charger you use. When charging at an ultra-fast 150kW public charging station, you can replenish your battery from 20% to 80% in as little as 20 minutes. Home charging will typically take longer and is best done overnight - a dedicated 7kW wall box will take your battery from empty to full in approximately 9 hours.

What is the warranty on a Hyundai IONIQ 5?

When new, all Hyundai IONIQ 5 models came with a five-year, unlimited mileage warranty which means you still benefit from multiple years of cover when buying a used example. The car's battery comes with a separate 8-year, 125,000-mile warranty for additional peace of mind.

Is the Hyundai IONIQ 5 EV or hybrid?

The Hyundai IONIQ 5 is available with an all-electric powertrain only. If you're considering a hybrid model, we'd recommend looking at the Kona or Tucson.

Is the IONIQ 5 different to the IONIQ?

Yes, the IONIQ 5 and IONIQ are two separate models within Hyundai's range. The IONIQ 5 is an advanced all-electric SUV, while the IONIQ is a smaller family car that offers hybrid variants too.

Why is the Hyundai IONIQ 5 so popular?

The Hyundai IONIQ 5 is a common choice for used buyers thanks to its cutting-edge technology and efficient all-electric powertrain. Its retro-inspired looks allow you to stand out from the crowd, too.

Is the Hyundai IONIQ 5 a hatchback or an SUV?

While the IONIQ 5 looks like a hatchback at first glance, it's actually a rather large vehicle and is classed as an all-electric SUV (or CUV, if you want to be specific). This means you benefit from enhanced practicality and a higher driving position compared to traditional used family hatchbacks.
