Engines and transmissions

Hyundai has released the Ioniq with a hybrid, plug-in hybrid and electric configuration. Hybrid models have a dual-clutch automatic transmission, while the electric variants use a single-speed gearbox. All variants power the front wheels.

Electric
  • 28kWh battery offers a maximum driving range of around 193 miles.
  • 118bhp configuration can provide a 0-62mph time of 9.7 seconds.
  • 134bhp configuration can achieve 0-60mph in 9.6 seconds.
  • Charging occurs in as little as 30 minutes with a fast charger, six hours with a Wallbox, and 11 hours with a domestic home charger.
Petrol
  • Self-charging 1.6-litre GDI engine produces 139bhp for a 0-62mph time of 10.8 seconds and fuel economy of up to 78mpg.
  • PHEV also has an output of 139bhp and offers up to 39 miles of electric driving per charge.

Practicality

The Hyundai Ioniq provides the space needed for a family to get comfortable and offers an enjoyable drive in the city or on the motorway.

Interior space
  • Tall passengers can find a comfortable position even in the back seats.
  • Three children fit well in the rear seat; two adults with a child fit in the middle.
  • Back doors open wide, giving quick access to the ISOFIX anchor points for child seats.
Boot space
  • 443-litre boot in hybrid variants is larger than the Kia Niro, but the electric model has a reduced capacity of 350 litres because of the increased room taken up by batteries.
  • Folding the rear seats (60:40) opens up 1,505 litres of space.
  • Wide, square boot opening allows for large boxes to be packed.

Safety

  • Perfect five-star safety rating in 2016 Euro NCAP testing.
  • Adult occupant given a top score of 91%, with safety assist at 82% and child occupant at 80%.
  • Standard kit includes an array of airbags and automatic emergency braking.

Technology

  • Large 10.25-inch touchscreen display is easier to read than the standard 8.0-inch version.
  • Available satnav offers live traffic and fuel information.
  • Connectivity is seamless through Bluetooth, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
  • All-digital instrument cluster can be personalised with various colours and display options.

Hyundai Ioniq video review

Different generations of used Hyundai Ioniq

Hyundai released the Ioniq in 2016 to compete against the Toyota Prius. However, Hyundai built the car to house a mild-hybrid, plug-in hybrid and fully electric configuration. The hybrid configuration was the same used in the Kia Niro, so there was no question about the reliability of the setup. However, before the Ioniq could reach a second generation, Hyundai discontinued the lineup in 2022. The nameplate is now used exclusively for cars in their fully electric lineup, including the Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6.

Used Hyundai Ioniq FAQ's

Which is the most popular engine in the Hyundai Ioniq?

Between the hybrid and electric configurations, the self-charging Ioniq is the most popular, with low running costs and a lower purchase price than the PHEV model.

Which are the most popular model variants?

Hyundai offers the Ioniq in several variants, including SE, SE Comfort, Premium and Premium SE. The last two are the most popular, with top-spec features such as electric seat adjustments and upgraded technology.

What optional extras should I look out for?

Many people enjoy the upgraded tech features, such as the larger infotainment touchscreen that offers real-time traffic data. Electrically adjustable seats are also helpful for taller passengers.

Is the Hyundai Ioniq a good family car?

Yes, the Ioniq offers a spacious and comfortable cabin with room for the tallest passengers. There's also a decent amount of boot space, especially with the hybrid models.

Is there a hybrid version of the Hyundai Ioniq?

Even though the Ioniq comes with an electric configuration, there are also two hybrid models to choose from. The mild-hybrid 1.6-litre GDI engine produces 139bhp to create a 0-62mph time of 10.8 seconds, while the PHEV has the same output of 139bhp and allows for up to 39 miles of electric driving per charge.

Is the Hyundai Ioniq available as an automatic?

The Ioniq only comes equipped with an automatic transmission. Hybrid models include a dual-clutch automatic, while the electric configuration is equipped with a single-speed gearbox for instant torque.

Is there a four-wheel drive version available?

No, with the hybrid, PHEV and electric setup, all Ioniq models have motors that power the front wheels only. However, the driving manners are more than sufficient for conventional road surfaces.
