Engines and transmissions

Hyundai has provided petrol, diesel and hybrid powertrains with the Santa Fe. These pair to a manual or an automatic gearbox and front- or four-wheel drive.

Petrol
  • Older 1.6-litre four-cylinder engine is now used by the Santa Fe Hybrid.
  • Mild hybrid outputs a total of 226bhp, allowing the SUV to hit 62mph in 9.1 seconds with impressive fuel economy of up to 44.1mpg.
  • PHEV has a larger motor to create 261bhp, reducing the 0-62mph time to 8.8 seconds, while offering an electric-only driving range of up to 36 miles.
Diesel
  • 2.2 SmartStream generates 197bhp for a 0-60mph time of 9 seconds and an efficiency rating of 47.1mpg.

Practicality

With various seating options and high-tech interiors, the Hyundai Santa Fe is a practical vehicle for families of all sizes.

Interior space
  • Cabin can be configured with two rows for five passengers or three rows for seven passengers.
  • Front seats have heating and ventilation for more comfort on more expensive model variants.
  • Middle row slides back and forward, creating more space for passengers in the back.
  • ISOFIX points for child seat installation are found on the outer middle row seats and the front passenger seat.
Boot space
  • 571 litres of boot space when the third row is folded down.
  • Folding down both back rows creates 1,625 litres of space.
  • Clever boot design includes a luggage net, luggage hooks and an available remote opening tailgate.

Safety

  • Five-star rating given by Euro NCAP in 2018.
  • 94% adult occupant rating shows that the Santa Fe is one of the safest vehicles.
  • Child occupant rating is 88%.
  • Standard kit includes forward collision avoidance and pedestrian detection.

Technology

  • Large 10.25-inch infotainment system available on top-spec models.
  • Available head-up display provides instant access to valuable information while enabling drivers to maintain a view of the road.
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity work with compatible devices.

Hyundai Santa Fe video review

Different generations of used Hyundai Santa Fe

Hyundai released the Santa Fe as a rugged SUV in 2000, and it instantly gained popularity with families looking for a practical vehicle. Over the course of five generations, the Santa Fe continued to be updated and revised, with the styling changed from an off-roader to a comfortable family cruiser. Hyundai continues to release high-tech equipment and advanced safety features, ensuring that the Santa Fe remains desirable amongst modern competition.

Fifth Generation (2024 to 2024)

With the arrival of the fifth-generation Santa Fe, Hyundai decided to give the SUV an entirely new look. It became larger and boxier, but was also filled with more high-end features and premium materials. The front end was given a flatter look and most of the rounded style was gone. With a mildly sloped roof line, the SUV now had a bolder appearance.

It's also fitted with fold-flat seats that could be used to sleep on when travelling. Santa Fe also received technology upgrades, such as a large infotainment screen that seamlessly fits with the bigger panoramic curved display.

Fourth Generation (2021 to 2024)

Sharper lines and a more modern design were added to the fourth generation Santa Fe. New models had 18-inch alloy wheels, LED running lights, automatic climate control and enhanced connectivity. The Santa Fe was also made to be more comfortable for families, with three-row seating coming as standard.

A 2020 refresh added even more tech features to the large SUV. On the outside, a new shield was added to the lower air intake and a redesigned rear bumper gave it a more modern appearance.

Third Generation (2012 to 2024)

Even though the third-generation Santa Fe remained affordable, the appearance looked more stylish than before with its bigger grille and bold look. The large grille was topped with three horizontal chromed lines and the bumper housed large fog lights for better visibility.

The third-generation Santa Fe didn't receive as many updates as other models, but Hyundai only kept it for six years, so it remained a relevant and fresh option for families, especially considering the large amount of powertrains that were available.

Used Hyundai Santa Fe FAQ's

Which is the most popular engine in the Hyundai Santa Fe?

Overwhelmingly, the 2.2-litre CRD diesel engine has been the most popular, likely because of its efficiency. However, the newer petrol hybrid models are becoming increasingly popular, too.

Which are the most popular model variants?

Most generations were available in SE, Premium and Premium SE, though some newer models also come in a variant called Ultimate. The most popular variant among used models is the Premium with its balanced range between the bottom and top specs, including an electrically-powered automatic tailgate, privacy glass, roof rails, and heated front seats with lumbar support.

What optional extras should I look out for?

Heated and ventilated seats can provide more comfort on longer drives, while the larger 10.25-inch touchscreen display is also a top choice. Customers desiring more protection should look out for the rear cross-traffic alert, which warns drivers when other vehicles are passing behind when they're reversing from a parking space.

Is the Hyundai Santa Fe a good family car?

Yes, newer models come standard with three rows to hold up to seven people, though there are older models with five seats. Comfort is a priority in the Santa Fe, and there's a decent amount of boot space provided.

Is there a hybrid version of the Hyundai Santa Fe?

While there was a time when the Santa Fe was only available with a diesel engine, there are now newer hybrid models available. It's possible to find a mild hybrid or plug-in that offers up to 36 miles of electric-only driving per charge.

Is the Hyundai Santa Fe available as an automatic?

Yes, Hyundai has offered both automatic and manual gearboxes with the Santa Fe. Among used models, the automatic transmission tends to be more popular, but there should be no problem finding either one for a reasonable cost.

Is there a four-wheel drive version available?

Yes, Hyundai made the Santa Fe with four-wheel drive capability. In fact, this setup is more popular than the front-wheel drive models. Four-wheel drive offers better handling on uneven or slippery terrain.
