Why buy a used Jaguar X-Type?
Launched in 2001, the Jaguar X-Type saloon is a compact executive car with timeless styling, good handling, a comfortable cabin, and a refined ride experience. An estate model followed in 2004, which was the first estate manufactured by Jaguar. Due to dwindling sales, the X-Type was discontinued in 2009. Is the Jaguar X-Type a good car?
Whilst not as popular as its rival cars from the premium German manufacturers of Audi and BMW, the Jaguar X-Type still offers some desirable features. If you prefer the traditional look of older Jaguars, then you'll likely find the X-Type a handsome car. It also has a luxury look and appeal to it, with a comfortable and refined interior as previously mentioned. If you can find a well-looked after model then the X-Type can certainly be a good car to own. However, it is important to choose wisely when buying a second-hand Jaguar X-Type (see below).
Is the Jaguar X-Type a reliable car?
Whilst the Jaguar X-Type is good to drive and very affordable to buy, it is known to have reliability issues. Unless you already have a good amount of knowledge on buying second-hand vehicles, we'd recommend taking along someone who knows what to look for. That being said, the later X-Type models enjoy improved build quality and can prove more reliable when well serviced and looked after.
Is the Jaguar X-Type expensive to run?
The answer to this question really depends on the quality of the X-Type you purchase (see above), so it's important to choose the car carefully and ideally check it over first with a mechanical inspection. If things do go wrong it can prove more expensive. When it comes to fuel efficiency, the V6 petrol engines unsurprisingly provide power, but a poor return. For better mileage, opt for a diesel, which will lower the running costs.
Is the Jaguar X-Type a safe car?
The X-Type was tested in 2002 by the safety experts at Euro NCAP, scoring a respectable four stars out of five. However, this result was actually considered somewhat disappointing. It had an overall rating of four stars for adult occupant safety, but a mere one star for pedestrian safety.
How much does the Jaguar X-Type cost?
Since being discontinued, this second-hand car has an average used price of just £2,881. You can also find older models for as little as £400 as well, although it's worth noting these cars are often for 'spares or repair.' That being said, you can find well-looked after X-Types with low mileage under 70k miles for around £1,000 to £1,500.
