Jaguar XK video review

Different generations of used Jaguar XK

The Jaguar XK came to the market in 2007, but the carmaker retired the model in 2014. However, not before Jaguar proved its worth as the go-to luxury sports car. The first XKs versions to debut in the UK came with the same refined 300 bhp 4.2-litre V8 engine responsible for powering its predecessor, the XKR. After a 2009 facelift, new XKs models came with an all-new 5.0-litre direct-injection V8 engine. The new engines were tuned to deliver 380 bhp, 503 bhp or 542 bhp, depending on the trim spec level. However, even the least powerful option was sufficiently speedy, sprinting from 0-60 m/h in just 5.2 seconds and can reach a maximum speed of 155 m/h.

What can you expect to find in a Jaguar XK?

The Jaguar XK comes as either the Dynamic R or Jaguar XKR-S trim line, plus several optional add-ons are available for each to boost the speed, safety or handling. Each trim level comes in two different body styles; a coupe and convertible. Some of the standard features found across the XK range include:

  • Front driver, passenger and side airbags
  • Traction and stability control
  • Electronically adjustable front seats
  • Sat-nav
  • Heated seats
  • Air conditioning

The XK's interior is lavish with a combination of leather and quality wood coverings. Also, nearly every movable component in the XK is electronically powered, together with plenty of various other equipment, such as:

  • Dual-zone climate control
  • Bluetooth connectivity
  • In-dash 6-disk CD changer

With the XKR-S premium-grade trim line, you get more comfort and extra high-performance features, including 16-way adjustable heated and cooled seats, keyless entry, 20-inch alloy wheels and suede headlining. You also get a refined Bowers & Wilkins hi-fi sound system. Some of these features are also available as optional add-on packages for the Dynamic R trim level.

Used Jaguar XK FAQ's

How does Jaguar XK feel while driving?

Sporty. Firstly, the driving position feels good in the XK. It offers several seating positions and steering adjustment options, making it easy to get into a comfortable driving posture. As a sports car, the suspension allows for fairly rough handling, resulting in better coping and comfortable cruising on hard or bumpy roads. Versions produced after 2009 came with a circular gear selector that rose from the central console, making the XK even more entertaining to drive.

How comfortable is the Jaguar XK?

The 4 seats inside the XK are made of plush and leather upholstery, but the rear seats are a bit cramped for tall or large adult occupants. The XK is a long-distance luxury tourer by design, so it does very well at minimising wind and engine noise at high speed. However, you might need to steer clear of the 20-inch alloy wheels, as they tend to increase the tyre roar to a noticeable level.

What is the running cost of a Jaguar XK?

Jaguar XK is a luxury sports car designed to deliver speed and exhilarating performance, but often at the expense of emissions and reduced fuel economy. The monstrous V8 engine is thirsty, so you'll need to keep a light foot to hit 33mpg. The large fuel tank will definitely impact running costs, depending on how often you drive your XK. The Jaguar XK emits 264 g/km of CO2, which attracts an annual road tax of approximately £580. Maintenance and insurance can also be costly, but if you buy a used XK from a reputable dealer at a good price, you can offset running costs by acquiring a good car that holds its value. This is because Jaguar is known for delivering reliable service, so if the car you pick up has been lovingly cared for, it could end up running you less than a newer model with a questionable service history.

How helpful is the Jaguar Drive Control (JDC)?

The patented Drive Control system is only available in XK models produced after the March 2009 facelift. The smart-driving system provides 3 different driving modes designed for driving in certain conditions. Starting from the standard driving mode, you can flip the JDC switches near the gear selector to change over to Winter or Dynamic driving mode. The former helps control the vehicle better on low-grip or slippery surfaces. The latter Dynamic mode increases the throttle response and gear-changing rate. When used correctly, the driving modes optimise the vehicles to suit driving conditions, thus benefiting safety and performance.

How much boot space does the Jaguar XK have?

Thanks to its raked tailgate, the XK has a surprisingly sufficient amount of boot space. It offers 330 litres of storage space, which is more than enough for a few weekend suitcases or some golf clubs. In comparison, the Audi RS5 offers 380 litres and the Nissan 370Z just 235 litres. You can also take advantage of its diminutive rear seats for extra storage space as needed. However, the XK's shallow boot can make it a little challenging to slide boxy items in the boot.

What safety features come with the Jaguar XK?

Like most luxury sports cars, the Euro NCAP never tested the Jaguar XK. However, the XK has plenty of safety equipment, including several airbags, electronic stability control and cruise control. Jaguars are known to be quite solid and strong, so if it's anything like other Jaguar X-Type, vehicles, the XK likely hold well for a car of its class. Plus, the XK has a significant safety feature that pops up the bonnet to protect pedestrians against injuries in the event of a crash.

What are the suitable alternatives for the Jaguar XK?

Jaguar faces very stiff competition from all sides, as the luxury car market has many leading brands. In terms of value for money, the Mercedes SL most likely comes out on top as the best alternative. However, if you're really after a great 4-seater luxury sports car, then you should consider the Maserati Granturismo.
