Engines and transmissions

The Jeep Wrangler has been sold in the UK with a number of different petrol and diesel engines, paired with both manual or automatic transmissions. It has always had four-wheel drive capability as standard.

Petrol
  • 2.0 turbo GME produces 268bhp for a 7.6-second 0-62mph time and a 27.2mpg rating.
  • JK-generation engines make between 174 and 284bhp, depending on the configuration.
  • Older models offer 122 to 184bhp from either a 2.5- or 4.0-litre engine.
Diesel
  • The 2.8-litre CRD diesel has been a popular choice over the years, producing up to 197bhp in later models and capable of around 34mpg
  • The newer 2.2-litre MultiJet diesel also produces 197bhp, and is rated at 30mpg
  • It's worth noting that the two engines were tested for fuel economy under different regulations, and everyday performance/mpg will be about the same for both.

Practicality

While not designed to be the outright most family-friendly SUV out there, the Jeep Wrangler has become more practical over the years. Four-door models are significantly more practical than two-door examples.

Interior space
  • Both two- and four-door models have two rows of seats, with the larger option offering more interior space.
  • Power-adjustable seats are available, allowing for easier positioning.
  • Some models feature leather seats that add a luxury feel to the interior.
Boot space
  • 548-litre boot in four-door holds a large amount of gear.
  • 2,050 litres of cargo space available behind first row in four-door Wrangler.
  • Two-door Wrangler has a smaller amount of boot space.
Bodystyles
  • Two-door Wrangler is the original design.
  • Four-door Wrangler was introduced later and became popular among families.
  • Customisable options include removable doors, a removable hard-top or soft-top, and a pop-out windscreen.

Safety

  • Official Euro NCAP rating is one star despite strong side-collision performance, owing to lower frontal collision protection despite strong
  • Adult occupant rating is 50% with a child occupant rating of 69%.
  • Newest generation includes driver and passenger airbags, belt pretensioners, side airbags and speed assistance.

Technology

  • Newer models have an 8-inch infotainment display.
  • Available 7-inch colour driver display.
  • New models have standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Jeep Wrangler video review

Different generations of used Jeep Wrangler

Originally based on the Willys Jeep, the Wrangler was first launched in 1987. Since then, it has been through four generations. The styling hasn't changed too during that time, with only mild modernisation helping it to remain one of the most recognisable vehicles on the road. Jeep continues to add new features that make it more off-road capable and appealing to today's drivers.

Fourth Generation (JL) (2018-present)

With the start of a new generation, Jeep aimed to keep everything that was good about the previous versions and upgrade the vehicle in a few key areas. It became easier to convert the soft and hard tops, remove the doors and fold down the windscreen. Safety was enhanced with new airbags and active safety technology.

In 2024, the first refresh of this generation was released. It included new styling with an updated grille to provide more cooling, exciting wheel designs and an upgraded factory winch. Towing capacity was also improved.

Third Generation (2007 to Present)

The two-door 'JK' generation arrived with a 2-inch longer wheelbase and 3.5 inches added to the width, though the total length of the body decreased by 3 inches. These size changes made for a more comfortable interior, increasing its appeal to those looking for a family SUV.

In 2011, Jeep released a number of new updates, mainly to the interior. It received a new UConnect infotainment system, upgraded window control buttons and climate controls. There were also new options added, such as heated front seats and leather upholstery - look out for these on used examples.

Used Jeep Wrangler FAQ's

Which is the most popular engine in the Jeep Wrangler?

The 2.8-litre and 2.2-litre diesel powertrains are the most popular in the UK, thanks to their blend of performance, efficiency and towing capability.

Which is the most popular trim level?

The newest lineup consists of two trims: Sahara and Rubicon. Earlier trims include the Overland, Renegade and Jamboree. Overall, the most popular trim is the Sahara among Wrangler owners.

What optional extras should I look out for?

With so many wheel design options available, it's easy to find a used Wrangler with a customised exterior look. Some off-road upgrades provide better protection from damage, such as all-weather floor mats. A one-touch power top makes it easier to experience the open-air drive.

Is the Jeep Wrangler a good family car?

The Jeep Wrangler was not necessarily designed to be an everyday family car, but it can serve this purpose. The four-door Wrangler is a better option for families because it's easier to get into the back seat. There are also ISOFIX points for installing a child seat in the rear.

Is there a hybrid version of the Jeep Wrangler?

While a Hybrid Jeep Wrangler has been sold in other parts of the world, it hasn't been available in the UK. For now, Jeep offers a 4xe lineup for the Renegade, Compass and Grand Cherokee.

Is the Jeep Wrangler available as an automatic?

Yes, the newest lineup of Jeep Wrangler models comes standard with an eight-speed automatic transmission, with no manual option included. There are older models with a manual gearbox, but they aren't as popular overall.

Is there a four-wheel drive version available?

Because the Jeep Wrangler was specifically built to head off-road, it only comes with a four-wheel drive configuration. This setup, combined with the exceptional ground clearance and all-terrain tyres, provides remarkable off-road performance.
