Kia's first hybrid-only model, the Niro was released in 2017. As a crossover model, it fits perfectly between the compact Soul and bigger Sportage. Since its introduction, Kia has also released a plug-in hybrid model, an all-electric variant and several facelifts that keep the lineup fresh and new. Now in its second generation, Kia added some advanced tech features and safety equipment, giving even more value for the money.

Kia Niro generations
Second Generation (2022 to Present)
With the release of the new Niro, Kia ensured that it featured a whole new look worthy of modern times. The interior design is closely related to the EV6 electric model for more cohesiveness in the lineup.
While some of the powertrain options were refreshed and refined, Kia still offered a wide range of configurations. With a regular hybrid, plug-in variant and electric model, there's been a choice for every driver.

First Generation (2016 to 2022)
Sharing its platform with the Hyundai IONIQ, the Kia Niro has been available with several different models and a unique bodystyle. It's also well-known that this generation Niro received the official Guinness World Record for having the lowest fuel consumption of a hybrid vehicle in the world at the time of its release.
The first model to be released was a self-charging hybrid, followed a year later by the plug-in hybrid. Right after that, Kia also unveiled the all-electric Niro EV. While they all manage to have a similar exterior style and interior features, the power is produced differently with each.

Used Kia Niro FAQ's
How well does the Kia Niro handle?
The hybrid Kia Niro variant gets a 6-speed twin-clutch gearbox, which initially offers a slightly unsettling jerky shifting experience. However, the car soon settles down as it gains more speed. The steering offers direct feedback making it easy to handle, safe and predictable. Due to its electric-assist motor, the Niro is most efficient and drives best around the city.
What is the fuel economy of the Kia Niro?
The hybrid Kia Niro comes with a turbocharged 1.6-litre 104 bhp petrol engine combined with a 43 bhp electric motor. The plug-in PHEVs have an electric range of 30 miles, providing an overall economy of 200 mpg. The all-electric Kia e-Niro powered by the smaller 39 kWh battery delivers a range of 180 miles, and the 64-kWh battery delivers a cl| ass-leading range of 282 miles.
How long does it take to charge the Kia Niro EV?
The small battery in the Kia Niro takes about 6-7 hours to charge when using a 7.5-kW home charger. If you have the long-range battery option, the charging time increases to 9-10 hours. When using rapid charging points at 50 kW, it takes about 1 hour and 15 minutes. Charging with a 3-pin power supply will take about 24 hours to fully charge a drained battery in the Kia e-Niro.
Is the Kia Niro a comfortable car?
Front occupants in the Kia Niro have ample legroom and headroom, ensuring a comfortable drive around the town. The driver gets a wide range of adjustment options for the seat and steering wheel. However, the foot-operated parking brake sits a little high when it's disengaged. The Niro's square shape offers excellent headroom for passengers in the rear, even for taller adults.
How much boot space does the Kia Niro provide?
Even though the boot space is less than the 445 litres provided by the Toyota Prius, the Kia Niro's 382-litres boot is pretty sufficient compared to other rivals, like the Volkswagon Golf. Folding down the seats down increases the luggage space to 1,380 litres, except for the plug-in hybrid, which opens up 1,300 litres.
Is the Kia Niro a safe car?
The debut Kia Niro earned a 4-star rating in the Euro NCAP crash and safety test. However, adding the Advance Safety Pack option increases its safety rating to 5 stars. Kia added these safety features later as a standard, including emergency stop signal, lane-keep assist and a collision avoidance assist system. With all this, the Kia Niro is a safe car.
