The Kia Soul was released in 2008 as a compact crossover with a unique style. The urban-focused model had a boxy shape that has been upgraded through two generations, eventually inspiring the production of the Soul EV. While the Soul made it through two generations and multiple refreshes, petrol and diesel models were removed from the UK with the launch of a third generation in 2019.

Engines and transmissions
Kia has supplied several petrol and diesel engine options, paired to automatic and manual gearboxes, along with front-wheel drive.
Petrol- 130bhp 1.6-litre features a 0-62mph time of 10.6 seconds, with average fuel consumption reaching 41mpg.
- 1.6-litre T-GDI turbocharged engine increases output to 201bhp, reducing the 0-60mph time to 7.5 seconds, and with a fuel economy rating of 40mpg.
1.6-litre engine outputs 134bhp for a similar 0-62mph time as the base petrol, but with an efficiency rating of up to 58.8mpg.
Practicality
The Kia Soul is a compact car, but it has more space than it appears, making it a practical option for those driving in the city every day.
Interior space- Latest generation is longer, taller and wider, creating the most passenger space.
- Driver's seat is adjustable, along with the steering column, for a good position.
- Three adults fit in the back, but the middle may be better suited for a child.
- 354-litre boot is similar to the Peugeot 2008 and Nissan Juke.
- Putting down the rear seats creates 1,367 litres of space.
- Hatchback style and adjustable boot floor make loading and unloading easier.
Safety
- Expired 2012 Euro NCAP rating was four out of five stars.
- Child occupant earns the highest rating of 82%.
Technology
- Connectivity offered through Bluetooth and USB sockets.
- Available Apple CarPlay and Android Auto work well with compatible smartphones.
- Available 8.0-inch infotainment system provides better functionality.

Second Generation (2014 to 2019)
Kia didn't need to make many changes going into the second generation of Soul production, but it did create larger headlights to match the tiger-nose style of the upper grille. More cooling areas were also integrated into the vehicle to ensure better performance.
The dashboard was completely redesigned for this generation, with added vents and a revised centre stack. Upper model variants were given high-tech features, and further updates were released with the engine/transmission pairing.

First Generation (2009 to 2013)
Designed specifically as practical urban travel, the Soul was unveiled in 2008. Using the same platform as the Hyundai i20, the Soul was taller and sturdier. Its hatchback design and long wheelbase gave it more interior room than it appeared to have, surprising anyone who climbed inside.
Upon launch, Kia offered several engine options, along with some advanced tech features for safety and connectivity. It was also affordable to run with an emphasis on efficiency.

Used Kia Soul FAQ's
Is there an electric version of Kia Soul?
Yes, Kia offers the Kia Soul EV model, which rivals the Nissan Leaf and Hyundai Ioniq. It comes with a unique set of 16-inch alloy wheels and a lighter colour trim in its interior. The powertrain debuted with a 109 bhp motor, but Kia later introduced a 201 bhp electric motor with its 2019 Soul EV. The upgraded engine offers an increased all-electric range up to 280 miles. The introduction of the Soul EV marked the end of production for the Soul's petrol and diesel variants.
How does the Kia Soul drive?
The Kia Soul may not be the most exciting ride in its category, but you'll undoubtedly enjoy a better driving experience if you skip over the debut model. Later Soul generations come with Kia Flex Steer, a steering system that lets you change the steering weight and responsiveness between two modes: Normal and Sport. The suspension was also improved after its initial debut, making the Soul much more stable while remaining planted on the tarmac.
Is there an ECO dynamics version of the Kia Soul?
If you go with the Kia Soul, you will have to do without this superefficient technology that's only available on a handful of Kia models. The diesel engine remains the most economical option, with a claimed fuel economy of 58.8 mpg. The 1.6-litre petrol follows closely behind, providing a solid 43.5 mpg, while the 201 bhp engine returns a modest 40.9 mpg. The diesel CO2 emissions rise from 204 g/mile to 251 g/mile with the Soul Sport.
How practical is the Kia Soul?
Kia offers the Soul with only one 5-door body style. The Soul's unique boxy shape makes it sufficiently spacious, enough for 5 adults to travel comfortably. The driving position provides perfect visibility, and the adjustment positions for the seat and steering make it easy to get yourself comfortable in the driving seat for long journeys.
How much storage space is available on the Kia Soul?
You get creative storage options in the Soul, including deep bins in the doors, a large glovebox and a centre console with cupholders and a chubby cubby. The Soul provides a boot capacity of 314 litres, not including the hidden storage compartment under the boot floor. Although the rear seats don't fold completely flat, you'll still get a generous 1,367 litres of cargo room.
What is unique about Kia Soul's warranty?
The Kia Soul offers a class-leading 7-year/100,000-mile warranty, which is also transferrable with the change of vehicle ownership. New Kia owners also get a transferable 3-year/30,000 miles pre-paid Care-3 maintenance service package.
What is Kia Soul's safety rating?
Kia Soul scored a 4-star safety rating in the Euro NCAP crash test. Unfortunately, it received a disappointing 75% score on adult occupants' protection. The main reason was the lack of an autonomous braking system in the tested generation. The good news is that subsequent generations now include this feature, so a new test would likely yield a much better safety score. Standard safety features that come with the Kia Soul include front and side airbags, Isofix child-seat mounts, electronic stability control, anti-lock brakes and tyre-pressure monitoring.
