The Kia Sportage was initially introduced in 1993 when the manufacturer wasn't well-known. In 1998, it went through a big redesign, and one of the best-selling models in the UK was created. Its popularity grew massively with the launch of the third generation in 2010. Now in its fifth generation, the Kia Sportage continues to be popular with drivers who love its space, practicality and value for money.

Kia Sportage generations
Fifth Generation (2021 to Present)
More than 25 years after the first Sportage, Kia gave it a massive upgrade, making it better in traffic and busy urban streets. Starting with the boomerang lighting integrated into the tiger-nosed grille, the new Sportage looks extremely modern and sophisticated.
In the cabin, there's a wider digital instrument panel and a larger infotainment centre for easy viewing. The transmission dial takes the shifter out of the equation and streamlines the interior. It's also easy to customise the look with black/metal wood trim, quilted interiors and sage green accents.

Fourth Generation (2016 to 2021)
Quality went up a further notch on the fourth-generation Sportage, and many more interior features were offered. A new look gave it an elegant appeal but retained its original sporty nature. High-mounted seats offered more legroom to rear passengers, and the available open glass roof created a whole new interior experience.
A 2018 refresh focused heavily on the exterior design with updated bumpers, new lamps and stylish alloy wheels in a variety of sizes. Kia also released a hybrid variant, giving buyers the ability to opt for a lower-emission vehicle.

Third Generation (2010 to 2016)
Significant changes came with the third-generation Sportage as it moved away from being an off-road to more of an on-road vehicle. A 'tiger-nose' grille and headlight design were released with perfectly styled lines to make it stand out. The big boot space and room for five made it more desirable to families.
During a 2013 refresh, the Sportage was made to look even more powerful, with available Xenon headlights and big 18-inch wheels. In the cabin, all models received Bluetooth and high-tech equipment that kept the SUV up to date with the competition.

Used Kia Sportage FAQ's
Is the Kia Sportage a reliable car?
Yes, Kia puts a lot of pride into building reliable vehicles, which is why they all have class-leading warranty protection. Whether it's a new Sportage or a pre-owned model, it's built to last, especially with proper maintenance.
What are the selling points of the Kia Sportage?
The Kia Sportage offers a lot of high-tech equipment and efficient powertrains at a reasonable cost, making it one of the top-selling SUVs in the UK. It's worth buying a Sportage if you want to save some money and don't need high-end luxury touches.
Why is the Kia Sportage so affordable?
Kia is focused on offering well-specified trim levels and keeping things simple, providing good value for customers.
Is the Kia Sportage good for long-distance driving?
One of the hybrid Sportage models provides the best efficiency, allowing you to save money on longer drives. With a spacious cabin and a large boot, everyone will be comfortable on longer journeys.
Is the Kia Sportage comfortable?
Even though the Sportage is a lower-cost SUV, the ride is surprisingly quiet and comfortable. There's not a lot of engine or wind noise to speak of when out on the open road.
Are there both automatic and manual options with the Kia Sportage?
There are four transmission options to choose from when looking at a used Kia Sportage. There is either a 6-speed or an 8-speed automatic, as well as a 7-speed direct clutch transmission (DCT) option. The other one is a 6-speed manual gearbox.
Is the Sportage expensive to insure?
Entry-level Sportages with trim level 1 are commonly in insurance groups 11, 12 or 13, so they are reasonably cost-effective to insure for an SUV. A Sportage 2 can be as high as insurance group 22 depending on the size of the engine. A GT-Line S 2.0-litre CRDi Sportage sits in group 25, making it one of the most expensive Sportages to insure.
