The legendary Land Rover Defender, almost unchanged in nearly seven decades, is a British motoring icon to rival the much-loved Mini.
The latest Defender comes with a 120bhp 2.2L turbodiesel engine based on that of the Ford Transit, which is also available in 150bhp form. Older models since 2000 use similarly powered 2.5L and 2.4L turbodiesel units, all of which offer increased refinement at motorway speeds and improved economy.
Inside a Defender, you won't find the huge array of creature comforts present in your typical SUV, however you can expect basic luxuries such as electric windows, remote central locking, sat-nav and a CD player. Higher spec versions also include traction control and ABS.
Over the years, the Land Rover Defender diesel has acquired a vast range of body options, including short (90), medium (110) and long (130) wheelbases, two and four-door estates, vans and pick-ups and more. In all of them, cabin space is adequate and it's a lot of fun if you take it off the road.
