Why buy a used Land Rover Freelander?

If you're in the market for an affordable car that's capable and comfortable off-road, then a used Land Rover Freelander is a great choice. The Freelander was a best-selling model during its first generation, and it has a spacious interior that makes it ideal for families. On the used market, the Freelander acts as a great entry-level option to the modern Land Rover lineup.

Engines and transmissions

The Freelander lineup has been made with a choice of petrol or diesel powerplants, a manual or an automatic gearbox and standard four-wheel drive.

Petrol
  • Early 1.8-litre generates 115bhp, giving it a 0-60mph time of 11.8 seconds.
  • 2.5-litre V6 outputs 174bhp and is the least-efficient option at 22mpg.
  • GS model had a 3.2-litre V6 engine that produced 229bhp and a 0-60mph time of 8.4 seconds, making it the fastest Freelander available.
Diesel
  • eD4 produces 148bhp with an efficiency rating of 47.1mpg, in part due to the engine stop-start system.
  • More powerful 188bhp variant is available, but efficiency drops slightly to 40mpg.
  • Older 2.0-litre creates 96bhp, but it was also offered with a 110bhp output.

Practicality

The Land Rover Freelander was not just meant for rough terrain – it's also a practical, family-oriented SUV.

Interior space
  • Two rows of seats accommodate five adults in relative comfort.
  • High placement of the driver's seat provides a commanding view.
  • Available leather upholstery and heated seats offer more luxury.
Boot space
  • 755-litre boot is spacious enough for weekend luggage.
  • 1,670 litres available with the rear seats folded, which is more than the BMW X3.
  • Boot floor has heavy-duty materials that can be wiped clean.
Bodystyles
  • Two-door SUV has a sportier appearance.
  • Four-door model allows for easier access to the rear seat.

Safety

  • 2002 Euro NCAP adult occupant rating was three stars out of five.
  • Child occupant rating was one star out of four.
  • Seven airbags come as standard on newer models.

Technology

  • CD changer system available on some models.
  • Available satnav assists with navigation.
  • Parking sensors help with navigating tight spaces.

Land Rover Freelander generations

Before the Freelander, Land Rover offered the Defender, Discovery or Range Rover, leaving space for a more affordable model. The Freelander was released in 1997 to act as the entry point into the brand. Within the first generation, more than half a million models were sold, proving that it was a success. Through two generations, Land Rover kept the Freelander updated and modern until it was discontinued in 2014, replaced by the Discovery Sport.

Second Generation (2006 to 2014)

The Freelander 2 was built on the same platform as the Volvo XC60 and Ford Mondeo, but it had a classic Land Rover look. Its rectangular headlights were bigger, but the grille design remained mostly the same size.

During a 2009 refresh, the model complied with the Euro 5 standards with some powertrain upgrades. The facelift also added new headlights with a bold-looking grille, and rounded taillights were added to the rear.

Used Land Rover Freelander FAQ's

Which is the most popular engine in the Land Rover Freelander?

The 2.2-litre eD4 is the most popular with its 148bhp rating and efficiency of 47.1mpg. As the most efficient engine in the lineup, it helps to keep the running costs lower, which is what makes it so desirable on the used market.

Which are the most popular trim levels?

Over the years, Land Rover has offered many trim levels, including the S, SE, HSE and Sport with the first generation, and the GS, Metropolis and XS with the second generation. Above all, the GS is the most popular with enough standard equipment for a comfortable drive, including lumbar support, parking sensors and cruise control.

What optional extras should I look out for?

There were many options available for customisation with the Freelander when it was sold new. For that reason, it's easy to find a model with unique touches, such as enhanced wheel designs or roof rails. We also recommend looking out for updated safety features for added on-road protection.

Is the Land Rover Freelander a good family car?

Yes, with spacious seating to hold five people, the Freelander makes a great choice for families. There are more efficient models on the road, but this SUV doubles as an off-roader, so it is multipurpose.

Is there a hybrid version of the Land Rover Freelander?

No, the Freelander was discontinued before Land Rover installed a hybrid configuration. Consider a Discovery Sport PHEV if you're looking for a smaller Land Rover that's a hybrid.

Is the Land Rover Freelander available as an automatic?

Yes, Land Rover produced the Freelander with both manual and automatic transmission options. The manual is slightly more popular, but both are easy to find among used models.

Is there a four-wheel drive version available?

Because the Freelander was designed to be capable off-road, Land Rover installed four-wheel drive on all models from both generations, with no other drivetrain options available. This added capability makes it easier to handle the SUV on rough terrain.
