Engines and transmissions

New Range Rover Sports have a wide range of powertrain options, allowing for ultimate power or maximum efficiency. All engines pair with an 8-speed automatic transmission.

Petrol
  • Mild hybrid P400 uses a 3.0-litre turbo V6 to produce 400bhp and a 5.4-second 0-60 mph time.
  • Plug-in hybrid P460e uses the V6 engine to make 460bhp and reduces the 0-60 mph time to 5.3 seconds. It offers an all-electric range of up to 77.1 miles.
  • Plug-in hybrid P550e bumps up the power to 550bhp for a 4.7-second 0-60 mph time.
  • Mild hybrid P635 offers the most power at 635bhp, for an astonishing 3.6-second 0-60 mph time.
Diesel
  • More sensible 300bhp mild hybrid D300 has a 0-60 mph time of 6.3 seconds and a 36.9 mpg fuel economy rating.
  • 350bhp mild hybrid D350 has a 5.6-second 0-60 mph time and is rated at 36.9 mpg.

Practicality

The Range Rover Sport seems to balance size and functionality perfectly. There's space for executives to enjoy the ride or for the family to take a road trip.

Interior space
  • Rear reclining seats hold adults comfortably.
  • Rear-centre armrest with cupholders is ideal when travelling with four people.
  • Car seats are easy to load, and there are wide rear door openings.
Boot space
  • 835-litre boot is larger than most estate cars.
  • Adjustable air suspension helps lower the SUV to load heavy items.
  • Under-boot storage available.

Safety

  • Euro NCAP five-star safety rating provides peace of mind.
  • 85% rating for both adult and child occupant protection.
  • Advanced driver aids, such as adaptive cruise control and lane keep assist, increase safety.

Technology

  • Pivi Pro infotainment system includes a 13.1-inch touchscreen.
  • Curved screen reduces glares and looks stylish.
  • Digital display is clear and sharp.

Land Rover Range Rover Sport video review

Different generations of used Land Rover Range Rover Sport

Land Rover first introduced the Range Rover Sport in 2005 as a way of getting drivers into a different version of the Range Rover model, though this one was based on the same platform as the Discovery 3. It's currently in its third generation, with each one bringing more technology upgrades and styling updates, keeping the luxury SUV relevant in a competitive market.

Third Generation (2022 to Present)

In 2022, a new generation was released sharing Modulable Longitudinal Architecture (MLA) from the Range Rover. Some of the same elements paired with the Velar lineup, including the new LED headlights and retractable door handles. A double-aperture bumper was added with refreshed lower and upper grilles.

Inside the cabin, a 13.7-inch TFT display was included in the dash, with a 13.1-inch curved touchscreen display to increase functionality. Mild-hybrid powertrains are the big news, but the high-end model features a twin-turbo V8 shared with BMW.

Second Generation (2013 to 2022)

While the platform remained the same as the first generation, more styling cues were taken from the Range Rover Evoque, showcasing slimmer headlights that swept from the front wings. The front grille could be body-coloured or gloss black, allowing for some customisation. The seats also received some upgrades, with more support on the sides and additional comfort.

A 2017 facelift offered upgrades to the drivetrains, interior and exterior while the overall design remained similar to its roots. In 2019, a special-edition variant, known as the HST, arrived. The main differences include unique badging and some carbon fibre trim on the tailgate, side vents, front grille and bonnet. It also features a higher-powered engine for a more responsive drive.

First Generation (2005 to 2013)

Right from the start, the Range Rover Sport included an air suspension for a comfortable, compliant ride and substantial ground clearance for off-road enthusiasts.

In 2009, a refresh was released with an updated front fascia and LED daytime driving lights. Two fog lights were added to the wrap-around bumper, with re-arranged taillights in the rear. The interior space was a little cramped in this version, but it could hold two adults in the rear.

Used Land Rover Range Rover Sport FAQ's

Why is the Range Rover Sport so expensive?

Land Rover relies on high-quality materials to build vehicles, including the Range Rover Sport. These luxury SUVs have high-tech powertrains and features that further add to the cost. Owning a Land Rover can also be expensive in the long term because of higher maintenance costs. However, buying used can also reduce the costs.

How much should I pay for a Range Rover Sport?

Brand-new, Range Rover Sport models start at around £83,000 and go up from there, depending on the trim level and equipment. Used Range Rover Sport models can cost much less, allowing drivers to receive the luxury that's desired without spending a fortune.

What is the main difference between the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport?

The Range Rover is built on a longer wheelbase than the Range Rover Sport, giving the interior more overall space. These two models share a lot of the same equipment and feature similar styling, but the Range Rover Sport has a lower starting price.

What does the Range Rover Sport compete with?

There are several other luxury vehicles worth checking out, such as the Audi Q7, Porsche Cayenne and BMW X6. By sticking with Land Rover, there's also the option to go with the larger Range Rover or opt for a smaller variant, such as the Evoque or Velar.

Why do people like the Range Rover Sport?

The various powertrain options provide an exciting drive, while the interior provides maximum comfort and technology for increased enjoyment.
