Lotus is one of the all time great British motoring names and is synonymous with speed, performance and excellence. it's a brand that has a rich and impressive history and epitomises everything that's great about sports cars from the UK.
The legendary Colin Chapman founded Lotus Cars back in 1952 and some of the first models to be released included the Mark VI, the Seven (the rights of which were later sold to Caterham) and the Mark VIII. Right from the start, the main focus was to create lightweight autos with good handling and impressive performance. This mantra is still practiced today with phenomenal success.
Arguably every model of Lotus is iconic in some way, and the 1950s and 1960s were a golden age for the company. The Eleven, Elite, Monte Carlo, Elite and Elan were all incredible and typical of the design and engineering prowess of the company.
The 1970s and 80s brought greats such as the Elcat, Excel and Esprit; the latter even appeared in a series of James Bond films. The company was well established during at this point and had made a name for itself as a true legend. Always ahead of the game, there were few other British cars that could dethrone the famous marque.
Into the modern era, some of the defining models included the Elise, Exige. Instead of producing larger GT cars as was done in the previous decade, the company reverted back to its original philosophy of producing small cars with a powerful punch. Immense handling became the hallmark, and even today no other make of car can rival the poise and precision offered by a Lotus.
Racing is in the company's blood, and throughout its history Lotus has been a powerhouse in Formula 1. What it learnt on the track was applied to its road cars. With 73 race victories, 7 constructor's championships and 6 driver's championships, Lotus is one of the most successful teams and its iconic black and gold liveried cars were driven by greats such as Graham Hill, Stirling Moss and Ayrton Senna.
With all this excellence, it's no surprise to find that buying a brand new Lotus will set you back a fair bit of money, so buying second hand is by far the best way to go. Motors.co.uk has a wide range of used Lotus cars for sale, so finding something you like is very easy. Big discounts in price means you'll be able to join the elite club for much less of the cost!
Lotus is a band steeped in history and is one of the all time greats on both the track and the road. It has helped shape the course of motoring for the better, and one can only dream about what mind boggling delights the future will bring!
