Created to replace the Mazda 626, the 6 was first unveiled in 2002 and immediately became a success. Originally, there were three bodystyles (saloon, hatchback and estate) to choose from, offering plenty of variety and customisation. Mazda released three generations and several updates to ensure that the 6 remained relevant and modern until it was discontinued in the UK for the 2023 model year.

Engines and transmissions
Mazda offered petrol and diesel power options, though the vehicle was only available with petrol at the end of its production. There are also automatic or manual transmissions available with standard front-wheel drive.
Petrol- 2.0-litre engines output either 142bhp or 162bhp, with the lower-powered version taking 9.3 seconds to reach 60mph and the high-powered one reducing the time to 8.8 seconds.
- Fuel economy for these engines was a surprisingly impressive 41mpg on average.
- 2.5-litre makes 191bhp and is the fastest engine with a 0-62mph time of 8.1 seconds, reducing fuel economy to around 38mpg.
- Older models include 2.5-litre estate that generated 167bhp and a 1.8-litre saloon that produced 118bhp. These were nowhere near as efficient as their modern counterparts.
- 2.2-litre creates 147bhp with an efficiency rating of around 67mpg.
- More powerful 172bhp was available for a short time with a 7.6-second 0-60mph time.
- Second generation included a 2.0-litre that generated either 138bhp or 182bhp, depending on the configuration.
Practicality
The Mazda 6 is a comfortable car with a large amount of space, allowing users to have a reliable and efficient used option.
Interior space- Adjustable front seats and steering wheel make it easy for drivers to get comfortable.
- Headroom and kneeroom are generous in outer rear seats.
- Dual-zone climate control helps to keep passengers comfortable.
- Wide rear doors and ISOFIX mounting points make it easier to fit child seats.
- 480-litre boot available in the saloon, while the 60:40 split rear seats give way to more room.
- Tourer (estate) holds 522 litres of cargo or 1,664 when the rear seats are folded down.
- Sporty hatchback model was available during the first two generations.
- Saloon offered traditional styling and a comfortable interior.
- Tourer estate model provides slightly more space.
Safety
- 2018 Euro NCAP rating was a perfect five stars.
- Adult occupant rating was 95%, and the child occupant rating was 91%.
- Standard safety kit includes blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane keep assist and adaptive cruise control.
Technology
- 8.0-inch touchscreen display comes standard on the newest lineup.
- Base models can also have standard satnav (if they are from the final years of production).
- For crystal-clear sound quality, there's an available Bose premium stereo.
- Available head-up display.

Different generations of used Mazda 6
Third Generation (2013 to 2022)
Entering into the third generation, the Mazda 6 looked more elegant than ever. It also became more efficient with updated powertrains included, but the hatchback design was discontinued, leaving the saloon and estate. It provided precise handling and strong braking performance, allowing for a sports-car feel.
During these years, Mazda was praised for its high-tech equipment, such as the SKYACTIV engines, which were athletic yet economical. Several updates were released to revise the headlights, grille and rear styling. There were several wheel designs to choose from and lots of customisation options available.

Second Generation (2007 to 2012)
The most significant change with the second-generation Mazda 6 was the engines used. Mazda revamped the entire lineup and shuffled some of the trims around. Blind spot warning was first offered with this generation, and there was a new fog light design released in 2011.
By the generation's final year, the base model offered more value than ever, while the top trims came filled with the features that enthusiasts wanted. These were also the final years for the hatchback model.

Used Mazda 6 FAQ's
Which is the most popular engine in the Mazda 6?
The diesel and petrol engines are roughly equally popular with customers, but the diesels weren't available for very long. Regardless of whether you are looking for a focus on power or efficiency, there's a Mazda 6 engine to suit your needs.
Which are the most popular model variants?
Towards the end of its production, several model variants existed, including SE, SE-L Nav and Sport Nav. Despite being the most expensive, the Sport Nav is the most popular with its standard keyless entry, black leather trim and premium sound system.
What optional extras should I look out for?
There are various interiors, such as leather or a suede-type material, to look out for. The Mazda 6 has also been offered with a wide range of wheel designs for customisation. Dual-zone automatic climate control is an excellent choice for anyone regularly carrying passengers.
Is the Mazda 6 a good family car?
The back seat of the 6 offers enough space for adults, making it a spacious and affordable option for families. There's also enough boot space for luggage for families taking a holiday.
Is there a hybrid version of the Mazda 6?
Even though Mazda has been focused on making efficient engines, the company didn't release a hybrid version of the 6. Instead, it can be found with petrol or diesel powertrains.
Is the Mazda 6 available as an automatic?
Yes, Mazda offered the 6 with both an automatic and a manual gearbox. The manual transmission is far more popular, but customers shouldn't have any trouble finding an automatic version among used cars.
Is there a four-wheel drive version available?
No, Mazda only built the 6 with front-wheel drive. This capability should be enough for daily driving in the city and on the motorway.
