Mercedes-Benz is known for making some of the UK's most popular luxury saloons, so it came as no surprise when the E-Class was launched in 1993. The modern version is seen as a smaller variant of the S-Class, with Mercedes-Benz ensuring that the latest technology is always included in the lineup. Now in its sixth generation, the E-Class has been made in several body styles, including convertible, coupé, estate and saloon.

Mercedes-Benz E-Class generations
Sixth Generation (2023 to Present)
With the launch of a new generation, the E-Class continued using a platform geared toward internal combustion engines, even though there were hybrid models made available. Similar styling with the S-Class included various grille designs and and an optional intelligent lighting system for LED headlights.
Inside the cabin, styling cues were taken from the EQS and EQE electric models, including a digital dashboard and large screen. The addition of wood or carbon fibre trims accented the cabin, providing a further sense of luxury.

Fifth Generation (2016 to 2023)
Mercedes-Benz created the fifth generation with various designs for each level, with both the base and Exclusive line interiors complemented by an MB grille and star on the hood. The Avantgarde and AMG Line models featured a sports grill with a badge in the centre.
In 2020, a refresh was released to reveal new LED headlights and flat housings. Its 3D grille design was updated, and the rear was finished with a chromed splitter and LED taillights, giving it a sportier appearance.

Fourth Generation (2009 to 2017)
Major design changes came with this generation. The double-round headlights moved to a square design and a more muscular stance. Inside the cabin, a dashboard with a double instrument cluster dominated the interior, extending above the centre stack.
A refresh occurred in 2013 as the new square, sharp appearance was becoming dated. It featured more curved, wavy styling that required some new body parts, including different wheel arches.

Used Mercedes-Benz E-Class FAQ's
Which is the most popular engine in the Mercedes-Benz E-Class?
Over the last two generations, the E 220d diesel engine has been the most popular engine, due to its plentiful performance and excellent fuel economy. However, plug-in hybrid options may start to grow in popularity, though there are fewer used models currently on the market.
Which are the most popular trim levels?
Newer E-Class models come in five trims: AMG Line, AMG Line Advanced, AMG Line Premium, Exclusive Edition and AMG Line Premium Plus. The most popular is the AMG Line with its accessible starting price, strong equipment levels and premium exterior styling.
What optional extras should I look out for?
Look out for models with optional wheel designs, which can give the E-Class a sportier look. An available advanced assistance package also comes with adapative cruise control for a better (and safer) driving experience. It is also possible to find a 360-degree camera for improved visibility when parking.
Is the Mercedes-Benz E-Class a good family car?
Yes, the spacious Mercedes-Benz E-Class is an excellent family car. The rear seat accommodates tall passengers, while competitive boot sizes can offer more storage capacities than many top competitors.
Is there a hybrid version of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class?
Yes, Mercedes-Benz now has a plug-in hybrid variant of the E-Class. Known as the E 300 e, owners can enjoy up to 72 miles of electric driving per charge. It can go from 0 to 62mph in 6.4 seconds.
Is the Mercedes-Benz E-Class available as an automatic?
Yes, through the years, the E-Class has been available with several different automatic gearboxes. The most recent one is the 9G-Tronic Plus, the nine-speed dual-clutch automatic. There are also some manual older models out there on the used market, but they are incredibly rare.
Is there a four-wheel drive version available?
Yes, look for models badged as 4MATIC, which is the brand's name for its four-wheel drive system. This configuration ensures better handling and traction when the road gets slippery. As standard, the E-Class is rear-wheel drive only.
