The Mercedes-Benz G-Class was launched in the 1970s, originally as a military vehicle. It was in 1979 that the W460 G-Wagen was first made. Now, the luxury model is in its fourth generation, with each one offering more refined engines, updated technology and enhanced style. With each passing model year, Mercedes-Benz has found ways to make the lineup more upmarket and appealing.
Fourth Generation
Of all the updates done to the G-Class, the fourth generation may be the most dramatic. Mercedes-Benz carried out a complete overhaul to ensure that the premium SUV included user-friendly equipment and more refined standard features. Even with the modern redesign, the original look and feel were retained, so iconic is the exterior look.
Despite being an SUV, the G-Class can now compete with the fastest sports cars on the road, given that it produces up to 576bhp in AMG trim. Still, it's designed to take on rough terrain, and it has terrific off-road ability, if required.
Third Generation
It was more than 20 years since the original G-Class was released that the third generation came along. It arrived with two different versions of a V8 powertrain, ensuring that there was no lack of acceleration or torque. AMG models were available with up to 563bhp of output. Diesel versions were cheaper to buy and run, but they weren't as popular in the UK, and are rarer on the used market.
