Mercedes launched the large GL Class SUV in 2006. It's a big, luxurious off-roader with three rows of seats for up to seven people.
The American-built GL has five doors and all feature four-wheel drive. It is a superbly built and lavishly specified go-anywhere vehicle. The engines for this era include V6 and V8 petrol and diesel units, which come with a seven-speed 7G-Tronic automatic gearbox.
The range was mildly refreshed in 2012 with more sophisticated suspension and revised engines. The only diesel is a 3L V6 turbo and there are four V8 petrol units available. This generation offers a choice of modern automatic gearboxes.
In 2015 the range was renamed the GLS Class, to emphasise that this is the SUV version of the Mercedes S Class. You'll find that the GL combines the elegance, refinement and equipment of the Mercedes flagship luxury saloon with the off-road abilities of a genuine 4x4.
Despite its size, the big Mercedes SUV is amazingly car-like to drive, with precise, light controls. The most recent models have an array of high-tech equipment, including fuel-saving stop-start technology, self-levelling air suspension, electrically-powered tailgate and Bang & Olufsen surround-sound stereo system.
