Prior to being known as the S-Class in 1972, the model was called the W108, Wingtail and Ponton. Mercedes-Benz continued to update the S-Class to bring more tech features, passenger comfort and safety to the vehicle. Now in its seventh generation, the S-Class continues to be the flagship model for the luxury carmaker.

Mercedes-Benz S-Class generations
Seventh Generation (2020 to Present)
While there weren't a lot of styling upgrades made for the seventh generation, Mercedes-Benz did provide a few more extras for customers. New headlights were added and the front bumpers received an update. From a performance aspect, the rear-axle steering was improved to reduce the turning circle and offer better handling overall.
All of the major upgrades for this model occurred in the cabin. The head-up display received added virtual reality that helped drivers follow satnav directions better. Mercedes-Benz also updated the MBUX infotainment system, which now included up to five screens complete with OLED technology. Voice commands were refreshed so that users no longer had to say, "Hey Mercedes."

Sixth Generation (2013 to 2021)
A new look was added to the W222 model, including swept-back headlights, upgraded daytime running lights and a large grille. Traditional chrome slats adorned the grille, with radar attached behind it for the advanced safety features. With its new platform, the W222 included a comfortable air suspension system that dampened road bumps better than before.
In 2017, Mercedes-Benz offered a mild refresh with similar styling even though more than 6,000 components were upgraded. The main differences to the exterior were the new headlights, grille and bumper, while the interior received some new materials and a large 12.3-inch display.

Used Mercedes-Benz S-Class FAQ's
Which is the most popular engine in the Mercedes-Benz S-Class?
There's a nearly equal split between the petrol and diesel powertrains, each offering a unique advantage. The hybrid powertrains are also gaining more popularity as they provide short distances of electric-only driving.
Which are the most popular model variants?
The AMG Line models come in Premium, Premium Plus and Premium Plus Executive, while the AMG Performance models are offered as Night Edition or Touring. The AMG Line models have proven to be the most popular, with 19-inch alloy wheels, leather seats and Touch Control steering wheel pads offering extra touches of luxury.
What optional extras should I look out for?
With so many ways to customise the S-Class, you will be able to find a used model with a unique wheel design and upgraded exterior features that suit your preferences. We also recommend the high-tech head-up display for added safety and functionality.
Is the Mercedes-Benz S-Class a good family car?
Yes, this luxury vehicle is meant to provide comfort for all passengers, making it ideal for a family, though it obviously costs more than more basic saloons and luxury cars, owing to its size, performance and standard specification. There are also lots of tech features that add to the connectivity and entertainment.
Is there a hybrid version of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class?
Yes, Mercedes has offered several hybrid variants of the S-Class, with the S 580 e plug-in hybrid providing the longest electric driving range. Per charge, it can travel up to 73 miles on electric only, making it ideal for city navigation, converting to petrol/electric hybrid power for longer journeys. The newer models also come with mild hybrid technology for improved fuel economy, and never need to be plugged in.
Is the Mercedes-Benz available as an automatic?
There have been automatic and manual gearboxes offered with the S-Class. Overwhelmingly, the automatic options are more popular, making it very difficult to find one outfitted with a manual gearbox.
Is there a four-wheel drive version available?
Four-wheel drive has been available, but it's not ever so common amongst used models. The majority of used S-Class models that are sold come equipped with rear-wheel drive instead.
