Why buy a used Mercedes-Benz SL-Class?

The Mercedes SL is a grand tourer, two-seater sports car which dates back to the 1950s. The first version – the 300 SL – was made famous for its stunning looks and of course those Gullwing doors which opened upwards rather than outwards.

The original concept was simple – to create a sports car that was as great to look at as it was to drive, and that philosophy has continued through the years to the latest models. Read our expert Mercedes-Benz SL Class review for more information on the latest generation.

Mercedes-Benz SL-Class generations

From the first one in 1954, the Mercedes-Benz SL-Class has undergone several facelifts to remain elegant, sporty and powerful while still offering a convincing full-fat sports car experience.

What should you expect to find in a Mercedes-Benz SL Class?

The SL comes in four trim levels: AMG, AMG Line, AMG Sport and Grand Edition. The AMG range earned the SL a place among the fastest roadsters in the past decade. All the trims come with the following features as standard:

  • 7-speed automatic transmission
  • Body-coloured bumpers
  • Electric-powered driver and passenger seats
  • Heated seats
  • Remote locking

The current generation of SL cars also have several extra features - limited to the premium spec levels of the earlier editions - such as:

  • Electric sunroof
  • Height-adjustable seats
  • Parking sensors
  • Sports seats

Besides different performance-enhancing features, the real difference between the various trims of the SL Class is acceleration. While the entry point SL 400 is a moderately fast car, reaching 62 mph from a standstill in only 4.9 seconds, the V8 engine in the SL 500 takes only 4.3 seconds. The AMG SL 63 takes 4.1 seconds, while the V12-powered SL 65 does not exceed the 4-second mark. However, you will have to compromise on fuel efficiency in return for the extra take-off and engine power.

Used Mercedes-Benz SL-Class FAQ's

What is the Mercedes Dynamic Select system?

It is a system that helps you determine the handling capability of your Mercedes by offering 4 performance modes; Comfort, Sport, Sport+ and Eco. Many drivers prefer sticking with Comfort as it sustains the more refined driving experience of a roadster. The sportier modes increase steering weight and sharpen the gearbox's response and throttle, resulting in a handling challenge that only race car drivers fancy.

How spacious is the Mercedes-Benz SL Class?

The SL is a strict 2-seater with a classic long bonnet that makes it look more like a GT cruiser than a sports car. However, it is still spacious, having excellent legroom and headroom for occupants and modest storage of 500 litres when the roof is in place, and 350 litres with the roof stowed down. It also has a function that tilts the roof by 25 degrees when you need to put in your luggage while the roof is down.

How safe is the Mercedes-Benz SL Class?

The only SL model that Euro NCAP ever tested was SLC (also known as SLK), a 2002 model, which received . The latest generation of the Mercedes-Benz SL Class will certainly garner all the five stars in Euro NCAP crash tests. The SL Class has advanced safety features that include airbags in all possible places, all known driver control assistance systems and a tiredness detection system. It also comes with a Pre-Safe technology that prepares the car for an imminent collision to minimise occupant injury and vehicle damage.

Are there any significant improvements in the Mercedes-Benz SL Class dashboard?

While Mercedes has worked to match the look and the performance of the SL to the demands of the modern driver, it overlooked the dashboard. You get no touchscreen, and the vintage round-knob that controls the entertainment and air conditioning system makes the car appear out of date. However, there is an Apple CarPlay compatibility option.

How fast can one travel with the roof up?

One of the areas where the Mercedes-Benz SL Class's practicability comes into play is opening and closing the retractable roof. You can take off in the latest models while the roof closes and travel at a top speed of 25 mph. Mercedes also fitted the SL with efficient buffeting technology to keep the occupants comfortable when travelling at high speed with the roof down.
