Engines and transmissions

Newer MINI Convertible models come with three petrol engine options, with the choice of a manual or an automatic gearbox.

Petrol

1.5-litre three-cylinder creates 134bhp for a 0-62mph time of 8.7 seconds and an efficiency rating of up to 47.9mpg.
Base 2.0-litre four-cylinder outputs 189bhp, getting to 62mph in 6.9 seconds and showcasing up to 45.6mpg.
JCW models have a 227bhp four-cylinder that can hit 62mph in 6.5 seconds, rated at up to 40.9mpg.
Previous generations included a 120bhp 1.6-litre variant.

Diesel

Older models included a 1.6-litre and a 2.0-litre that could hit 110bhp.
A 114bhp 1.5-litre diesel was also previously manufactured.

Practicality

As a drop-top model, the MINI Convertible may be less practical than the hard-top variants, but it's worth having for the experience and fun.

Interior space

Newer models are more spacious than older ones.
Headroom is generous even with the top up.
Two rear seats are more suited for children or luggage.

Boot space

215-litre boot is reasonable for a convertible.
With the roof down, the boot is reduced to 150 litres.

Safety

Expired Euro NCAP rating for the hatchback is four stars.
Adult occupant rating is 79%, while child occupant rating is 73%.
Deployable roll hoops protect occupants in case of a rollover.

Technology

8.8-inch infotainment screen is included in the cabin.
Apple CarPlay is standard on newer models.

Different generations of used MINI Convertible

With the three-door hatch becoming such a popular option, MINI decided to release a Convertible in 2004. New generations were launched in 2009, 2015 and 2021, each bringing with it more style and improved practicality. MINI continues to focus on making it easier to live with while keeping the price reasonable enough for the everyday driver to afford it.

Fourth Generation

MINI released the S-version across the entire range when the fourth generation was unveiled. The styling is comparable with the Cooper S, including the black grille trim and special air scoops. The A-pillars are slightly raked, doubling as safety arches.

Inside the Convertible, MINI added a 5-inch digital instrument cluster and an 8.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system. The new sport bucket seats showcase the sporty feel, while the three-spoke steering wheel has the same design as previous generations.

Third Generation (2016 to 2024)

The new MINI Convertible came in several different variations, such as the John Cooper Works. Minor exterior differences include updated headlights wrapped in chrome rings and a hexagonal radiator grille. A longer wheelbase makes more interior space and a larger boot.

A 2018 refresh brings updated design touches and more standard features. Even the base trim included automatic headlights, Bluetooth and a six-speaker sound system.

Second Generation (2009 to 2015)

The second-generation open-top shared the front design with the hatchback, except that it added a second set of turn signals and a power-assisted folding roof.

Inside the cabin, all four windows could be operated from the centre stack buttons, located directly below the heater controls panel. A 'Big Ben' speedometer is found in the middle, where all passengers can view it, but the tachometer is situated behind the steering wheel for the driver's view only.
