Engines and transmissions

The new Countryman has two petrol engines to choose from, with the option of front- or all-wheel drive (ALL4). There are also all-electric, hybrid, petrol and diesel engine options to choose from, depending on the generation.

Petrol
  • Standard 1.5-litre three-cylinder engine outputs 136 horsepower for a maximum speed of 124 mph and a fuel consumption between 39.8 and 42.8 mpg combined.
  • Plug-in hybrid variant also has 136 horsepower but better efficiency and faster acceleration.
  • Larger 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine produces either 192 (Cooper S) or 306 horsepower (John Cooper Works).
  • John Cooper Works variant hits 62 mph in 5.1 seconds and has a rating of between 32.1 and 34.9 mpg combined.
Diesel
  • Current variations don't include diesel engines but previous generations included 2.0-litre engines.
  • Their brake-horsepower could be up to 189 and 0-62 mph could be hit in 7.4 seconds.
Electric
  • New all-electric variant to be released in 2024.
  • Stated range of up to 287 miles.
  • Horsepower between 167 and 214, depending on trim, with top speeds up to 112 mph.

Practicality

The MINI Countryman is the perfect option for fans of the brand who want more space to fit the whole family.

Interior space
  • More spacious than the hatchback lineup.
  • Sliding, reclining back seats can make long trips more enjoyable.
  • Back seats accommodate adults easily.
Boot space
  • 450-litre boot space behind rear seats (plug-in hybrid only 405 litres).
  • Maximum storage capacity is 1,390 litres with the rear seats folded.

Safety

  • 2017 Euro NCAP rating awarded five stars.
  • Standard safety kit includes parking sensors and automatic headlights.

Technology

  • Real-time traffic information helps to navigate urban roads.
  • Available AirConsole in-car gaming is part of the new infotainment system.
  • Available Level 2 semi-automated driving only comes on this MINI model.

MINI Countryman video review

Different generations of used MINI Countryman

BMW first released their version of the MINI Countryman in 2010 and it has been through several facelifts along the way, with the newest promising an all-electric powertrain coming soon. Over each generation, MINI has focused on creating a more stylish ride with the latest powertrain and technology, making it a competitive choice.

Third Generation (2024 to Present)

With the start of the latest generation, the Countryman lineup will be splitting into two different variants, one using an ICE variant and the other relying on electric power. The all-electric MINI will be released later than the ICE variant.

These MINIs have new headlight designs and a thicker grille (on the ICE version) to cool down the engine. Both can be seen with a silver plastic trim under the bumper, meant to resemble a skid plate.

Second Generation (2017 to 2023)

Officially the largest MINI on the roads at the time, its popularity grew quickly. Design changes to the second generation didn't affect the MINI branding. Instead, the roof was mildly extended and an all-wheel system (ALL4) was added for more capability. Inside the cabin, the design was also reminiscent of the smaller MINIs, but sliding and reclining seats were added to the back for even more comfort.

A 2020 facelift brought standard LED headlights and an available adaptive headlight system. A redesigned rear apron made the new LED taillights stand out.

First Generation (2010 to 2016)

MINI took the Cooper and turned it into a Countryman by extending the width, height and length. What resulted was a near-perfect 50/50 distribution between the front and rear for a crossover that handled well on curvy roads.

A 2014 update offered black-moulded wheel-arches to give it an off-road appeal. Tailgate changes were made so that it would be more vertical and curved.
