Used Mitsubishi Outlander information

Engines and transmissions

The Outlander has been available with petrol, hybrid and diesel engines, along with a manual or an automatic gearbox and standard four-wheel drive.

Petrol
  • Most recent version of the PHEV (plug-in hybrid) has a 2.4-litre engine and 13.8kWh battery to produce 220bhp and up to 28 miles of electric-only driving.
  • 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine generates 147bhp and offers a 0-62mph time of 13.3 seconds with a 32.5mpg rating.
  • Earlier 2.0-litre PHEV creates 200bhp and a 0-60mph time of 10.6 seconds. Officially, the earlier models had a better EV-only driving range of 32 miles.
Diesel
  • Fourth-generation diesel setup contains a 2.2-litre engine that makes 147bhp, creating a 0-60mph time of 11.2 seconds.
  • Third-generation model included a 2.0-litre that produced 138bhp and a 0-60mph time of 10.5 seconds.

Practicality

The Mitsubishi Outlander is a practical family vehicle with either two or three rows of seats, plus a decent size boot.

Interior space
  • PHEV features five seats in two rows, while the standard Outlander has three rows to make room for seven people.
  • Headroom is ample, with the cabin easily accommodating taller passengers.
  • ISOFIX mounting points to securely hold child seats.
Boot space
  • 591-litre boot with two rear seats folded down is larger than the Hyundai Tucscon and Kia Sportage.
  • PHEV contains a 463-litre boot due to batteries and electric motor equipment taking up space.
  • Total capacity of 1,756 litres with both rows folded down.

Safety

  • PHEV and petrol models given a five-star rating from Euro NCAP.
  • Outlander received a 94% adult occupant rating, 100% for safety assist and 83% for child occupant.
  • Outlander PHEV earned an 88% adult occupant rating, 84% for child occupant and 81% for safety assist.

Technology

  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto enhance in-cabin connectivity.
  • 8-inch touchscreen display is easy to see and use.
  • Available satnav adds more functionality for everyday driving.

Mitsubishi Outlander generations

Mitsubishi is no stranger to making popular SUVs, with the Outlander being one of the most well-known models. First released in 2003, the Outlander has been through four generations, each bringing more technology and equipment to the table. The plug-in hybrid arrived in 2012 and still remains part of the lineup today.

Fourth Generation (2021-present)

There weren't a lot of changes made to the fourth-generation Outlander. Styling updates included square LED headlights mounted to the side just above the bumper. The chromed shield-type grille came with three slats and a blackened area, which was typical styling for Mitsubishi.

Inside the cabin, available luxury touches were still optional for the top trims. Leather seats were available and the model continued with its seven-passenger configuration, with two folding seats found in the boot area.

Third Generation (2013 to 2021)

With the third generation, Mitsubishi placed the Outlander on a new platform, created in partnership with DaimlerChrysler. The longer wheelbase and transversely mounted engine meant interior space was greatly improved. A sliding function was added to the middle row of seats to make it easier to get into the back, and adjustable backrests were also provided for more comfort in the second row.

A 2016 refresh added a different style to the grille and headlights, which had more of an angular appeal. The headlamps also included the Outlander's turn signals, while the interior remained mostly the same.

Second Generation (2007 to 2013)

Mitsubishi worked with Peugeot-Citroen to make the second-generation Outlander, but one of the diesel engines was manufactured by Volkswagen. Curved panels and angular lines were added to the design to set it apart from the first models. There was also an aluminium shield found under the vehicle to protect the gearbox and engine from damage.

Clear taillights were added to the rear and a split-opening tailgate gave it a fresh appeal. Inside the cabin, not much had changed from the previous version, except for the new dashboard design.
