Engines and transmissions

All configurations of the GT-R include a petrol engine paired with an automatic gearbox and four-wheel drive.

Petrol
  • At launch, the 3.8-litre twin-turbocharged V6 created 471bhp.
  • 2017 revisions offered more power, up to 562bhp, while the Nismo topped the charts with 591bhp.
  • Top speed is 196mph with 0-62mph times below four seconds.
  • Average fuel economy rating is 23.9mpg with CO2 emissions of 275g/km.

Practicality

Considering the excellent performance of the Nissan GT-R, it's surprisingly practical, with seating for four occupants and several storage areas.

Interior space
  • Driver's seat is highly adjustable.
  • Adults can fit in the rear seats for a short drive, but they are better suited to children.
  • Headroom is abundant in the front, but is reduced slightly in the rear.
Boot space
  • 315-litre boot has a shape that's ideal for suitcases, measuring larger than the Porsche 911 and Jaguar F-Type.
  • Back seat can be used for additional storage when passengers aren't along for the ride.

Safety

  • No Euro NCAP rating given to the GT-R.
  • Standard kit includes six airbags for decent protection.
  • Bigger brakes reduce stopping time and provide better control.

Technology

  • Driver display showcases cornering g-forces, turbo boost pressure and other essentials.
  • BMW-style multimedia screen released with the 2017 update.
  • Two 12v power sockets included in the centre console.

Different generations of used Nissan GT-R

The GT-R first made an appearance in the UK in 2009, when Nissan dropped the Skyline name from its iconic sports car. Over the years, it has been offered in a variety of editions, including the coveted top-of-the-range Nismo variant. Nissan always kept the GT-R updated, so there was never a lack of comfort, power or technology. The GT-R was discontinued in the UK in 2022.

Used Nissan GT-R FAQ's

Which is the most popular engine in the Nissan GT-R?

All GT-R models include a 3.8-litre twin-turbocharged V6 engine. The most desired is the Nismo with an output of 591bhp, but it's also the most expensive, so most people tend to go for the standard GT-R.

Which are the most popular model variants?

Nissan offered the GT-R in several variants, including Pure, Recaro, Prestige, Track Edition and Nismo. Of these, the Recaro tends to be the most popular with its desirable red and black sports seats that enhance the appearance.

What optional extras should I look out for?

While the GT-R came well-equipped, even from the base model, there are also versions with full leather, lightweight 20-inch alloy wheels and a race-tuned suspension. There are also the Nismo-tuned Bilstein dampers for added control.

Is the Nissan GT-R practical enough to be used everyday?

While it wouldn't immediately be thought of as ideal for a family, the GT-R does have enough room in the rear seats for children. There's enough space for smaller adults for shorter journeys. Also, the boot is large for the segment, meaning that a couple of bags can be put in the back for a holiday. It's relatively quiet when you're not pushing hard, so can easily be used as an everyday sportscar.

Is there a hybrid version of the Nissan GT-R?

Nissan's focus was on creating the most power possible for the GT-R, so a hybrid version was never released. Instead, all models included a 3.8-litre twin-turbo V6 that was rated for up to 591bhp.
