Engines and transmissions

The Nissan LEAF comes equipped with an electric powertrain, an automatic gearbox and front-wheel drive.

Electric
  • 147bhp electric motor works with a 39kWh battery pack for a range of up to 168 miles.
  • LEAF e+ includes a 213bhp electric motor with a bigger 59kWh battery pack to provide a range of up to 239 miles.
  • 50kW DC charging takes the LEAF from 20% to 80% in about 90 minutes.

Practicality

The Nissan LEAF has a practical cabin and offers enough driving range to make it good for city travel, especially considering the relatively low price when compared with other EVs.

Interior space
  • Four adults can fit comfortably, with the rear middle seat better suited to a child.
  • Elevated seating position offers an SUV feel.
  • ISOFIX mounting points for child seats are standard in the rear seat, and available for the front passenger seat.
Boot space
  • 435-litre boot is larger than the Peugeot E-208 and Hyundai Kona.
  • 60:40 split rear seats open up 1,176 litres of space.
  • Tether points included to secure luggage.

Safety

  • Five-star Euro NCAP rating shows a high level of safety.
  • Adult occupant rating is 93%, while child occupant is 86%.
  • ProPilot autonomous driver assist package comes standard on newer models, offering help with braking, acceleration and steering.

Technology

  • 8.0-inch touchscreen is standard on newer models, with DAB radio, voice control and sat nav.
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto can be used for connectivity.
  • Six-speaker stereo offers good sound, but there is also a premium Bose unit available.

Nissan Leaf generations

The Nissan LEAF arrived in 2010 as an affordable electric car option. The LEAF is built in the UK and it quickly became the world's best-selling EV. Nissan is currently finishing the second generation of LEAF production, with the third generation expected to be launched in 2026. Each generation has brought more technology and a longer driving range, ensuring that the driver's needs are met.

Second Generation (2018 to Present)

The second-generation LEAF arrived sharing the same platform as before, but with major upgrades. The styling was updated, with its V-shaped grille found on other models. The floating roof style was borrowed from the Micra and 'Zero Emission' badges were added to both front doors. In the rear, LED taillights were added, along with a redesigned tailgate. To provide more interior space, Nissan increased the wheelbase and added a taller cabin.

A 2022 refresh brought new wheel designs and upgraded the interior technology. A new NissanConnect system was added and the ProPilot safety-assist features were introduced.

First Generation (2011 to 2017)

The all-electric compact hatchback was released to offer an affordable option to drivers who wanted a fully electric car. Its futuristic look may have appeared strange at first, but the design became popular with EV enthusiasts. Its headlights were installed closely together to protect them from damage while driving in the city. Instead of a radiator in the front, the charging point was found behind the badging.

Inside the cabin, dials were replaced with a TFT display, adding a modern touch for the time. There was also a large touchscreen display found on the centre stack to control the critical features of the vehicle.

Used Nissan Leaf FAQ's

Which is the most popular engine in the Nissan LEAF?

Which are the most popular model variants?

Nissan offers the newest LEAF in the following model variants: Shiro, Acenta, N-Connecta and Tekna. Of these, the Tekna appears to be the most popular as it comes equipped with many of the top features, including the advanced Bose sound system.

What optional extras should I look out for?

Leather seating is a big upgrade that gives the LEAF a premium feel. Customers can also choose LED headlights and LED fog lights for added visibility. Those who drive when it's cold outside should look out for the special Heat Pack that includes heated seats (front and rear) and a heated steering wheel.

Aside from the Nissan LEAF, the company also makes the Ariya. This mid-size electric crossover offers a much longer range, of up to 330 miles per charge, but is more expensive than the LEAF.

Is the Nissan LEAF available as an automatic?

As with most electric cars, the LEAF is only available with an automatic gearbox. This single-speed transmission offers instant torque for fast acceleration times.

Is there a four-wheel drive version available?

There is only a front-wheel drive configuration available. This setup ensures maximum efficiency and provides good handling for everyday driving situations.
