Perodua is a Malaysian automotive company that is renowned for producing micro cars and super minis. Very successful in its home market, the company has gained popularity overseas as it offer something quite different to what motorists are used to. If you're in the market for a small car, the brand is always worth a look.
Established in 1993, the company traditionally based its cars on popular Daihatsu designs. The first one Perodua released was the Kancil, a small and basic car that was an instant success thanks to its low price, ability to seat 5 people and ease of use.
Building on this, the next models to hit the roads were the Rusa minivan and Kembara SUV. Again, they were small, affordable and very cheap to run, but offered more room than regular 'cars'. The turn of the Millennium saw the Kenari and then the Kelisa, the former of which looked like a box on wheels but did the job perfectly well.
Around 2005, the company had clearly improved its design department as the Myvi, Viva and Nautica were miles better than previous offerings and actually looked quite stylish. Holding onto their roots however, the same inexpensive nature was clearly evident, although it has to be said they were a bit more upmarket. The 2009 Alza is everything you'd expect from a compact MPV in terms of usability, although it was not as popular as the Myvi.
What is obvious is that Perodua is a company that knows its market and delivers exactly what people want. They are great little cars that really do work quite well. If nothing else the improvements in design and functionality over such a short space of time should be commended, as modern variants look light years ahead of the original Kancil.
You can find a decent selection of second hand Perodua cars right here at Motors.co.uk and you'll note the reasonable prices compared to super minis offered by other companies. The fact you'll receive a generous reduction compared to buying brand new only makes the brand look even more attractive.
So if you're after a new car and it has to be small, cheap, cheerful and a bit different to everything else out there, check out a Perodua.
