Engines and transmissions

Over the years, the Peugeot 208 has been available with hybrid, petrol and diesel options, with the e-208 marketed as the electric option. These engines include manual or automatic gearboxes with standard front-wheel drive.

Petrol
  • 1.2-litre three-cylinder offers three outputs: 75bhp, 100bhp or 129bhp.
  • All models are efficient, with the 75bhp motor rated at up to 55.6mpg and the highest-powered delivering around 50mpg.
  • Hybrid configurations produce either 98bhp or 134bhp, depending on the trim.
  • Previous generation included a 1.0-litre that generated 67bhp.
Diesel
  • 1.5-litre available on earlier second-generation models, producing 99bhp.
  • This engine offers the best economy rating of the non-electrified versions, at up to 71.4mpg.
  • Previous generation included a base 1.6-litre that produced 73bhp and the 1.6-litre GT Line models that included 95, 118 and 162bhp versions.
Electric
  • 50kWh battery pack provides up to 217 miles of range
  • 8.1-second 0-62mph acceleration time means it feels quick, particularly around town

Practicality

With comfortable front seats, the 208 is a great option for city driving. It's nimble and practical because of its economical design.

Interior space
  • Adjustable driver's seat helps to make the most of the positioning.
  • Rear seats are average for the supermini segment and not designed to hold taller adults.
  • ISOFIX points are provided for child seats.
Boot space
  • 352-litre boot is average for the segment, coming in slightly larger than the Ford Fiesta.
  • Folding the rear seats down provides access to 1,163 litres of space.
  • Square boot shape is useful for loading a variety of cargo.
Bodystyles
  • Five-door hatchback has been available through both generations.
  • Three-door hatchback was only made during the first generation.

Safety

  • 2019 Euro NCAP safety rating is four stars.
  • Adult occupant rating is 91% and child occupant reaches 86%.
  • Standard kit includes road sign recognition, a lane departure warning system and automatic emergency braking.

Technology

  • 7-inch infotainment system works with Bluetooth and DAB radio.
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto provide seamless connectivity.
  • Available 10-inch infotainment system comes with satnav.

Second Generation (2016 to 2024)

While the second-generation 208 followed the path of the previous models, this version is more stylish, premium and is higher quality overall. It has an upmarket feel, with the incredibly nice interior playing a big part in that. It's no wonder that it's a former European Car of the Year winner.

For this lineup, Peugeot dropped the previously available three-door hatchback, leaving only a five-door model. The carmaker also introduced an electric version with a different model name, the e-208.

First Generation (2009 to 2016)

Available as a three- or five-door hatchback, the first generation 208 was stylish and designed to stand out in a competitive segment. Peugeot didn't create this lineup with a convertible or an estate, as it did the 207, but enthusiasts didn't seem upset about it. However, most of the engine options did carry over, and a few more were added during the years.

A facelift arrived in 2015, even though the 208 didn't need many changes. The appearance was altered slightly, and Peugeot released the exciting GT Line trim. This model sat at the top of the range, offering more power for an exhilarating drive.
