Renault Grand Scenic generations

Renault Scenic enjoys a lustrous history on UK roads, mainly with its 5-seater model that invented the compact MPV class. It remained at the top of its category since its debut in 1996. A second generation launched in 2003. A 7-seater Scenic II badged as the 'Grand Scenic' came to the UK market in 2004, replacing the Renault Espace. The Scenic III was introduced in 2009 and remained in production until 2016, making way for the fourth generation that is still produced today. The fourth-generation Renault Grand Scenic is more agile, comfortable and longer than its predecessors. You can choose from 5 engine options, with the base model offering an acceleration sprint from 0-62 mph in 13.3 seconds and can achieve a top speed of 111 mph. The most powerful engine option can reach 62 mph from rest in just 10 seconds and achieve 121 mph at full speed.

What should you expect to find in a Renault Grand Scenic?

The Grand Scenic comes in 4 trim levels, starting with the entry-level Expression+, the Dynamique Nav and the Dynamique S Nav. The top-of-the-line Grand Scenic trim is the Signature Nav, which comes with plenty of extra technology, comfort and convenience. The unique standard features in the entry-level 2017 version (or newer) Grand Scenic include:

  • 20-inch alloy wheels
  • Hands-free key card
  • Active emergency braking
  • Cruise control
  • 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system
  • Lane-departure monitoring system
  • DAB radio and Bluetooth connectivity

Taking a step up to the Dynamique Nav trim gets you an upgraded sound system, sat-nav, drive-mode selector, front and rear parking sensors, driver assist system and power-folding rear seats. Moving up to the third level of trim, the Dynamique S Nav, you'll get a wealth of additional equipment, including:

  • Head-up display
  • 8.7-inch touchscreen display
  • Reverse parking camera
  • Panoramic glass sunroof
  • Contrasting exterior roof and mirror colour

The top-of-the-range flagship trim, the Grand Scenic Signature Nav, comes with front foglights, full-LED headlights, a leather steering wheel, leather power seats and fold-out picnic tables on the back seats. Additionally, except for the Expression+ version, other trims feature the R-Link 2 multimedia system with a large touchscreen infotainment display, voice control, satellite navigation with a free 12-month TomTom Traffic subscription, among other special vehicle applications.

Used Renault Grand Scenic FAQ's

What are the engine options available for the Renault Grand Scenic?

There are 5 engine options: a 1.2 TCe turbocharged petrol engine tuned to 110 bhp or 130 bhp, a 1.5-litre dCi diesel with 110 bhp, plus a 1.6 dCi diesel engine with 130 bhp or 160 bhp. All engine options come standard with either a 5 or 6-speed manual transmission, but the Renault EDC twin-clutch automatic gearbox comes standard on the 160 hp 1.6-litre dCi diesel or as an option with the 1.5-litre dCi.

Which engine option is the best for Renault Grand Scenic?

The answer depends on a few factors, including your budget, intended driving purpose and, of course, personal preferences. The 1.6-litre 128 bhp is a popular choice, as it's more refined and offers more torque leading to better performance than the 1.5, but it lacks an automatic gearbox. Although the 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine with 114 bhp takes the lead in cost-effectiveness, it is a sluggish underperformer. If you must drive an automatic, then the best engine option for you is the powerful 1.6-litre diesel with 156 bhp.

Is there a hybrid version of the Renault Grand Scenic?

Renault introduced a hybrid in its fourth-generation 2017 Grand Scenic lineup. It features a 48V battery that charges the car through recouped braking energy, which helps boost the MPV's economy and acceleration. The Renault Hybrid Assist model comes with a 1.5 dCi diesel and 6-speed manual gearbox.

How does the Renault Grand Scenic handle?

For a vehicle of its size, the Grand Scenic is more responsive around bends than most people would expect, thanks to its well-weighted accurate steering and agile construction with little body roll. Besides a slightly noticeable wind noise due to thin windscreen pillars, the Grand Scenic delivers a smooth and enjoyable ride on motorways. The only letdown might be the manual gearshift, but this should not be an issue if you're a lover of manual transmissions.

Is the Renault Grand Scenic spacious?

The 7-seater MPV offers practical, sufficient leg and headroom for the front driver and passenger, along with passengers in the back seats. For storage, there are also numerous clever storage spaces throughout the cabin. With all the seats in place, the Grand Scenic provides a meagre boot space of 233 litres, but folding down the back row gets you 765 litres of storage capacity. When you fold down the last two rows of seats, it's more than generous with its roomy 1,73 litres of boot storage.

What is the safety rating of the Renault Grand Scenic?

With a reinforced steel structure and several standard safety features, including 7 airbags, the Renault Grand Scenic is among one of the safest MPVs in its class. The Euro NCAP confirmed this by awarding the Grand Scenic with a 5-star safety rating, including a 91% score for adult occupant safety.
