There are two recent Saab Estates to choose from: the 9-3 Sport Wagon, aimed at the same market as the Audi A4 Avant and the BMW 3 Series Touring, and the larger 9-5 Sport Wagon which shares the practicalities of the Mercedes E-Class and Volvo V70.
The 9-3 comes with a choice of 120 or 150bhp 1.9L turbodiesels and 120, 150 or 175bhp 1.8L and a thirsty 2.8L V6 petrol engines. The best of these is the more powerful diesel, offering better all-round performance and lots of mid-range torque for serious load carrying. The 9-5 also offers a gutsy 185bhp 2.3L petrol engine - it's also available with 220bhp.
Both Saab Estates are well-equipped, especially when compared to their more expensive rivals, and you should expect to find climate control, CD player, electric windows and alloys. You won't get quite as exciting a drive as you would from the German competition though.
Inside, the 9-3 has lots of room for four adults and a relatively compact 477-litre boot. The bigger 9-5 offers a more impressive 527-litre luggage area which expands to over 1,600-litres with the back seat down.
If you're thinking of buying a used Saab Estate, you can find a great selection at Motors.co.uk.
