The Legacy range was launched in 1989 by the Japanese manufacturer Subaru. It was the new flagship for the brand and was a premium quality saloon and estate with four-wheel drive fitted to every model. The petrol engines were Subaru's own distinctive flat-four Boxer engine.
The range was has been regularly revised and updated. The whole car was enlarged in 1995 and the Legacy continues to be built today. In 1996 the Legacy Outback was introduced - a more rugged estate version with raised body height.
Since 2003 the standard Legacy Estate has been known as the Sports Tourer. There was a significant facelift in 2007 and in 2008 the first diesel engine appeared.
The legacy has won numerous accolades since. It is considered one of the best-made cars with unsurpassed reliability and durability. The mechanical underpinnings are strong and built to last and the engines are punchy and fun to drive, with tenacious grip and agile handling. The cabin is unfussy and spacious; the tailgate lifts to reveal a large and useful boot. On the more recent models the boot space is 526 litres and a massive 1,677 litres with the rear seats folded down.
