Engines and transmissions

A variety of petrol and diesel engines can be found in used examples of the Suzuki Grand Vitara, along with an automatic or a manual gearbox and standard four-wheel drive.

Petrol
  • Third-generation release offered a 1.6-litre engine producing 104bhp or a 2.0-litre motor creating 138bhp.
  • 2.4-litre later replaced the 2.0-litre and generated 163bhp with a 0-60mph time of 10.8 seconds.
  • Second generation included a 92bhp 1.6-litre, a 126bhp 2.0-litre and a 142bhp 2.5-litre.
  • The most powerful model was also available in the second generation, with the 2.7-litre V6 engine generating 180bhp.
Diesel
  • 1.9-litre (shared with Renault) produced 127bhp for a 0-60mph time of 12.4 seconds.
  • Second generation included an 85bhp or a 107bhp 2.0-litre model, depending on the variant.

Practicality

The Suzuki Grand Vitara builds on the smaller Vitara to be even more practical and accommodating to passengers.

Interior space
  • Longer and wider style makes the third generation the roomiest of the models.
  • All models have sufficient headroom for taller passengers.
  • Rear doors give easier access to the back seats.
Boot space
  • 398-litre boot in five-door model can be increased to 758 litres by putting down the back seats.
  • 184-litre boot in three-door model opens up to 516 litres with the back seats down.
  • Hidden storage found under the boot floor for hiding valuable items.
  • Wide-opening tailgate allows for bulky items to be loaded.
Bodystyles
  • At launch, the Grand Vitara had a five-door body.
  • One year after its introduction, the GV2000 Soft Top was launched with three doors.
  • The three-door estate completed the range in 2000.

Safety

  • 2007 Euro NCAP rating for adult occupant was four stars.
  • Both child occupant and pedestrian given a three-star rating.
  • Standard safety kit includes ABS, electronic brakeforce distribution and multiple airbags.

Technology

  • Attractive dashboard is equipped with buttons for stereo and heating controls.
  • Easy-to-read instrument gauges are backlit for visibility.
  • Trip computer in the centre of the dash can be configured for time, outside temperature and current mpg consumption.

Suzuki Grand Vitara generations

The Suzuki Grand Vitara arrived in the UK to begin its second generation in 1998. While it started as just a five-door model, the three-door and soft-top versions arrived shortly afterwards. In 2014 (during the third generation), Suzuki discontinued the Grand Vitara and replaced it with the more modern, comfortable and refined Vitara in 2015.

First Generation (1991-1994)

In other parts of the world, the Grand Vitara was released in 1991 as a long-wheelbase model of the Vitara. Initially, it had room to hold five people and came equipped with an independent front suspension, a rigid rear axle and a uni-body construction.

The Grand Vitara had similar styling to its smaller sibling, the Vitara. Both shared rectangular headlights, a rear-mounted spare tyre and interior styling. However, this larger model had a three-slat grille surrounded by chrome.

Second Generation (1998-2005)

This 4x4 on-demand SUV was released as a way to enjoy on- and off-road driving. With more comfort offered than the original Vitara and added space, it was unveiled as a vehicle for busy families. Some styling features that set it apart included the rounded shape, high roofline and lower beltline. Suzuki didn't move the spare wheel from the tailgate for this generation either.

Customers loved the high front seats and lower dashboard, allowing for more visibility of the road. There were also several powertrains offered with running costs kept to a minimum on smaller engines.

Third Generation (2005 to 2014)

Upon its release, the third-generation Grand Vitara was one of the best value vehicles in its class. The styling was changed with new angular headlights and redesigned side windows. It also looked more like an off-road vehicle than previous versions.

A 2008 refresh helped the lineup to comply with Euro 5 emissions standards. Suzuki also replaced the front bumper with one with smaller fog lamps and offered new 17-inch light-alloy wheels.

Used Suzuki Grand Vitara FAQ's

Which is the most popular engine in the Suzuki Grand Vitara?

Most customers prefer the petrol engines with either the 1.6- or 2.0-litre powertrain. Both of these supplied enough power for everyday use, but helped to keep the purchase cost to a minimum. The 2.0-litre is relatively thirsty on petrol, though.

Which are the most popular variants?

Suzuki offered several trims throughout the life of the Grand Vitara, including the SE, SZ3, SZ4 and SZ5. The SZ5 is popular among Grand Vitara owners because of its extra features such as 18-inch alloy wheels, electric glass sunroof, satnav and leather seats with front seat heating.

What optional extras should I look out for?

The best part about the Suzuki Grand Vitara is how much customisation was available. With the various colour options, wheel designs and styling accents, it's possible to find a used Grand Vitara that looks different from others Customers should look out for models that include rear privacy glass, cruise control and front seat heating.

Is the Suzuki Grand Vitara a good family car?

The five-door Grand Vitara is a practical family vehicle, offering a spacious cabin and a comfortable driving experience. With the decent amount of boot space, there's also room to put several bags in the back for a family holiday.

Is there a hybrid version of the Suzuki Grand Vitara?

No, Suzuki discontinued the Grand Vitara before a hybrid engine was installed. However, the company does have a hybrid Vitara model currently available, offering plenty of style and efficiency.

Is the Suzuki Grand Vitara available as an automatic?

Overwhelmingly, the used Grand Vitaras come with a manual gearbox. There are some used models with an automatic transmission, but they are more difficult to find.

Is there a four-wheel drive version available?

Because the Suzuki Grand Vitara was designed with off-roading in mind, all models come standard with four-wheel drive. While this setup does make it slightly less efficient than some other SUVs, it does offer better off-road capability.
