Used Tesla Model Y Information
Generations
Currently, there's only one generation of the Tesla Model Y available. With the covers being taken off in 2019, the first generation was introduced to sit between the likes of the Model S saloon and larger Model X SUV within the Californian brand's lineup. Since then, the Model Y has gone on to become one of the world's best-sellers thanks to its advanced gadgets and fantastic all-around experience.
Powertrains
Coming with an electric powertrain only, used Tesla Model Y examples offer some of the cleanest means of driving currently available.
The majority of cars you'll find on the used market will come with the brand's entry-level, 347bhp rear-wheel drive powertrain that offers a battery range of up to 283 miles before needing a recharge.
There are dual motor, all-wheel drive 'Long Range' and 'Performance' models available too, catering for different lifestyles dependent on your preferences. Offering 384bhp and a battery range of an impressive 331 miles, the former is better suited to those regularly travelling further afield, while the latter offers a more dynamic setup, providing 426bhp, a 0 to 62mph time of 3.5 seconds and a battery range of 319 miles.
As an electric-only vehicle, all Model Y examples come with an automatic gearbox.
Practicality
As one of the most practical vehicles available in this segment, a used Tesla Model Y will be more than practical enough for the daily lives of most.
Most of its rivals will struggle to beat the 854-litre boot space, while there is underfloor storage and a number of handy compartments to enhance practicality further. With no engine to worry about, you can also make the most of the Model Y's 'frunk' under the bonnet which offers an additional 117 litres of storage space that proves handy when storing the car's charging cables or smaller bags of luggage.
Despite the car's sloping roofline, passengers will be left with little to complain about, with sufficient amounts of head and legroom for adults throughout. Tesla has also considered those that regularly tow additional bits of equipment, with a respectable braked towing capacity of 1,600kg - make sure to find an example with a towbar though, as this came as an optional extra when new.
Safety
Designed for safety, used Tesla Model Y examples come with a host of safety equipment to provide a high level of active protection while out on the road.
The likes of collision avoidance and automatic emergency braking come as standard, while the autopilot system uses front, rear and side-facing cameras to provide further peace of mind. Used examples with the 'enhanced autopilot' system take another stride, with auto park and 'smart summon' offering extra protection when parking in tight spaces.
All of this, paired with the Model Y's intelligent overall design and low centre of gravity, resulted in the car receiving the highest Euro NCAP safety score recorded.
Technology
You'll find a plethora of technology when searching for a used Tesla Model Y and most of it comes as standard, too. The most noticeable of the gadgets will be the 15.4-inch touchscreen that stands out in the mostly minimalistic interior. Through this system, you can control the heavy majority of the car's other equipment such as satellite navigation and climate controls, while there's even the option to stream media through the likes of YouTube and Netflix when parked.
'Enhanced autopilot' and 'Full self-driving capability' are further features to look out for when browsing the used market, as these were expensive additional options when new. 'Sentry mode' is another intelligent system that records and alerts you of suspicious activity around your vehicle when it is locked and parked.
All in all, you'll be hard-pushed to find a used EV that's as well-equipped as the Model Y when it comes to onboard technology. They're not compatible with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto though, so you'll have to make do with the car's standard infotainment system.
