Why buy a used Model Y?

As a cutting-edge alternative to other electric SUVs, the Tesla Model Y has become a hit since its introduction in 2019. With an impressive all-electric range, bundles of interior technology, and recognisable Tesla styling, it's one of the most attractive options in this corner of the used market.

At Motors.co.uk, we work with an extensive network of car supermarkets as well as officially-franchised, specialist and independent dealerships to help you find a used Model Y that's the right match.

Used Tesla Model Y Information

Generations

Currently, there's only one generation of the Tesla Model Y available. With the covers being taken off in 2019, the first generation was introduced to sit between the likes of the Model S saloon and larger Model X SUV within the Californian brand's lineup. Since then, the Model Y has gone on to become one of the world's best-sellers thanks to its advanced gadgets and fantastic all-around experience.

Powertrains

Coming with an electric powertrain only, used Tesla Model Y examples offer some of the cleanest means of driving currently available.

The majority of cars you'll find on the used market will come with the brand's entry-level, 347bhp rear-wheel drive powertrain that offers a battery range of up to 283 miles before needing a recharge.

There are dual motor, all-wheel drive 'Long Range' and 'Performance' models available too, catering for different lifestyles dependent on your preferences. Offering 384bhp and a battery range of an impressive 331 miles, the former is better suited to those regularly travelling further afield, while the latter offers a more dynamic setup, providing 426bhp, a 0 to 62mph time of 3.5 seconds and a battery range of 319 miles.

As an electric-only vehicle, all Model Y examples come with an automatic gearbox.

Practicality

As one of the most practical vehicles available in this segment, a used Tesla Model Y will be more than practical enough for the daily lives of most.

Most of its rivals will struggle to beat the 854-litre boot space, while there is underfloor storage and a number of handy compartments to enhance practicality further. With no engine to worry about, you can also make the most of the Model Y's 'frunk' under the bonnet which offers an additional 117 litres of storage space that proves handy when storing the car's charging cables or smaller bags of luggage.

Despite the car's sloping roofline, passengers will be left with little to complain about, with sufficient amounts of head and legroom for adults throughout. Tesla has also considered those that regularly tow additional bits of equipment, with a respectable braked towing capacity of 1,600kg - make sure to find an example with a towbar though, as this came as an optional extra when new.

Safety

Designed for safety, used Tesla Model Y examples come with a host of safety equipment to provide a high level of active protection while out on the road.

The likes of collision avoidance and automatic emergency braking come as standard, while the autopilot system uses front, rear and side-facing cameras to provide further peace of mind. Used examples with the 'enhanced autopilot' system take another stride, with auto park and 'smart summon' offering extra protection when parking in tight spaces.

All of this, paired with the Model Y's intelligent overall design and low centre of gravity, resulted in the car receiving the highest Euro NCAP safety score recorded.

Technology

You'll find a plethora of technology when searching for a used Tesla Model Y and most of it comes as standard, too. The most noticeable of the gadgets will be the 15.4-inch touchscreen that stands out in the mostly minimalistic interior. Through this system, you can control the heavy majority of the car's other equipment such as satellite navigation and climate controls, while there's even the option to stream media through the likes of YouTube and Netflix when parked.

'Enhanced autopilot' and 'Full self-driving capability' are further features to look out for when browsing the used market, as these were expensive additional options when new. 'Sentry mode' is another intelligent system that records and alerts you of suspicious activity around your vehicle when it is locked and parked.

All in all, you'll be hard-pushed to find a used EV that's as well-equipped as the Model Y when it comes to onboard technology. They're not compatible with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto though, so you'll have to make do with the car's standard infotainment system.

Used Tesla Model Y FAQ's

Is the Telsa Model Y luxurious?

With its wide range of technologies and minimalistic interior design, the Tesla Model Y offers a luxurious cabin and overall experience. If you're in the market for a used luxury EV, it's worth considering the likes of the Jaguar I-PACE and Mercedes-Benz EQC, too.

How long does the Tesla Model Y last?

It's estimated that the battery in a Tesla Model Y can last for between 300,000 and 500,000 miles before it needs replacing, but this really depends on the car's maintenance record and general condition, so be sure to double-check the documents of any used cars you're considering. All Model Y batteries are covered by Tesla's extensive battery and drive unit warranty too, so confirm how much cover you have left before purchasing the car.

How many miles will a Tesla Model Y go on a full charge?

With all-electric ranges starting from 283 miles, even entry-level Model Y examples offer a driving range that many of its rivals cannot match. If you regularly travel longer distances you may want to consider the higher-spec 'Performance' or 'Long Range' models, as these offer ranges of 319 and 331 miles respectively before needing a recharge.

How much does it cost to charge a Tesla Model Y?

How much it costs to charge your Model Y depends on what charging type or provider you use. Home charging will be the most cost-effective option, as the rates for electricity are better than what you'll find at a public charging station. Recharging a Model Y both at home and in public often works out to be significantly less than the costs of refuelling a petrol or diesel equivalent. You also have the added benefit of accessing Tesla's Supercharger network, too.

Does a Tesla Model Y retain its value?

As with many other vehicles, a new Tesla Model Y tends to have a sharp initial depreciation before stabilising after approximately 3 years. This is great for used buyers, as it allows them to purchase a used Model Y for significantly less than what it cost when new. After the initial depreciation has occurred, a Model Y should retain its value fairly well thanks to its desirable brand and technology.

Why is there no 7-seater Tesla Model Y in the UK?

While the Model Y is available in the US as a 7-seater, UK buyers were unable to opt for the additional seats with Tesla stating 'it doesn't have a timeline' for when it will be available. However, there are plenty of other fantastic used 7-seat electric cars for you to consider, if you need the additional space.

How much is the Tesla Model Y in the UK?

The price of a Tesla Model Y starts at around £45,000 when new. Used examples, can be had for significantly less and prove to be great value for money if you're in the market for an electric car.
