Toyota unveiled the iQ in 2008, showing that a tiny 2-door city car can hold more than two people. Dubbed the 3+1 configuration, the car measures less than three metres and features an incredibly short front end. The headlights have new-age styling with sharp corners and curved lines for a modern look. The vertical tailgate at the back completes the iQ design. Despite its best efforts, the iQ never became as popular as Toyota intended and it was discontinued in 2015.

Why buy a used Toyota IQ?
If you're in the market for a tiny city car that's compact, cheap to run and stylish, then a used Toyota iQ is a great choice. Measuring less than three metres long, it's not much different in size from two-seaters, except the iQ has a 3+1 configuration. The clever layout helps it to offer more room than its competitors, making it more versatile.

Engines and transmissions
The Toyota iQ has been offered with a choice of two petrol engines, a manual or automatic gearbox and standard front-wheel drive.
Petrol- 1.0-litre generates 68bhp, allowing the iQ to hit 0-60mph in 13.6 seconds.
- 1.33-litre engine increases output to 96bhp, reducing the 0-60mph time to around 13 seconds.
- Efficiency rating is around 65mpg with the smaller engine and around 54mpg with the larger option.
Practicality
The Toyota iQ may be more practical than it looks, especially as the city car can hold up to four people, although they may be slightly cramped in the back.
Interior space- 3+1 configuration offers three full-size seats with a smaller one behind the driver.
- Front seats have adequate shoulder and elbow room, with headroom sufficient for tall drivers.
- Rear seats are slightly cramped, making them better for young children.
- 32-litre boot behind rear seats.
- Folding down the rear seats provides 242 litres of boot space.
Safety
- Expired Euro NCAP rating offers perfect five stars.
- Adult occupant rating is 91%, with a safety assist score of 86%.
- Standard kit includes nine airbags, a seatbelt reminder system, traction control and ABS with brake assist.
Technology
- Six-speaker sound system is standard with a CD player.
- Keyless entry and start were available on top-of-the-range models

Used Toyota IQ FAQ's
Which is the most popular engine in the Toyota iQ?
The smaller petrol engine has been the most popular, due to its efficiency. With the car's small size, the 68bhp is more than enough to keep the car moving and the 65mpg rating is great for saving money.
What are the most popular trim levels?
Toyota offered the iQ in three trims: iQ, iQ2 and iQ3. The mid-range iQ2 is the most popular among iQ owners due to its extra features, such as 15-inch polished alloys, chrome-tinted front foglamps and privacy glass.
What optional extras should I look out for?
Larger alloy wheels help to give the iQ a unique style, while front fog lights and bi-halogen headlights can add more visibility. For more comfort and functionality, consider looking for models with climate control and an auto-dimming rearview mirror.
Is the Toyota iQ a good family car?
Despite there being two small seats in the back, the iQ is suitable really suitable as everyday family transport. It is possible to fit two adults in the front and two small children in the back, but three people is a lot more realistic and comfortable than four. There's also not a lot of boot space unless the rear seats are not in use.
Is there a hybrid version of the Toyota iQ?
While Toyota is a leader in hybrid technology, the iQ has only been available with the choice of two petrol engines. The smaller size helps it to achieve up to around 65mpg, making it efficient enough without hybrid tech.
Is the Toyota iQ available as an automatic?
The Toyota iQ has been made with both manual and automatic gearbox options. The manual has been more popular and is easier to find among used cars, though the automatic is better for inner-city driving.
Is there a four-wheel drive version available?
All Toyota iQ cars have been built with standard front-wheel drive. Due to the smaller size and weight, four-wheel drive is unneeded.
