Engines and transmissions

Toyota has offered several diesel engines with a manual or an automatic gearbox and standard four-wheel drive.

Diesel
  • Newest lineup includes a 2.8-litre turbo diesel to produce 201bhp and hits 0-62mph in 9.3 seconds. It's capable of around 34 mpg.
  • Older models include a 2.8-litre engine that produces 174bhp with an estimated rating of 27-30mpg, replacing the previous 3.0-litre.
  • Previous 3.0-litre variant generated 187bhp and accelerated from 0-62mph in 11 seconds, again achieving around 30mpg.

Practicality

The Toyota Land Cruiser has an accommodating cabin and plenty of power, making it ideal for family adventures.

Interior space
  • Configurations range from five to seven-passenger setups.
  • Second row has plenty of headroom and legroom for adults.
  • Third row is better suited to children but can hold adults for short trips.
Boot space
  • 120-litre boot with all seven seats in place.
  • Putting the third row down creates a 640-litre boot capacity.
  • Boot door swings open from one side.

Safety

  • Euro NCAP hasn't tested the Toyota Land Cruiser yet.
  • Seven airbags and stability control are standard.
  • Rear cross-traffic monitor helps when backing up the large SUV.

Bodystyles

  • Five-door variant is the most popular in the UK
  • Rare three-door models are still sought after

Technology

  • Touch 2 infotainment system keeps drivers connected.
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto work with compatible devices.
  • Available 14-speaker JBL sound system provides a high-end touch.

Different generations of used Toyota Landcruiser

The orginal Toyota Land Cruiser was initially created as a military vehicle, with the first models arriving back in 1951. Over the eight generations, there have been countless changes, but Toyota has always worked hard to ensure that the lineup was reliable and practical for off-road driving. With the most recent generation starting in 2024, Toyota has added even more high-end features so that it remains competitive in the full-size SUV market.

Eighth Generation

Toyota made the Land Cruiser's chassis 50% stiffer while also improving the rigidity of the body by 30%. Both upgrades help to improve its responsiveness, ride comfort and handling, whether it's on or off the road.

Toyota also added new electric power steering, reducing the amount of kickback that can occur when navigating rougher terrain. It also improves manoeuvrability at lower and higher speeds. This system works in conjunction with Lane Tracing Assist, which is included with the Safety Sense driver-assist package.

Seventh Generation J200

This generation of Land Cruiser came equipped with modern features, such as four-zone climate control and a smart start system. Toyota also enhanced the safety, with upgraded airbags and a fantastic downhill driving assist system.

A 2015 facelift added to the exterior design with updated headlights, a new grille, and restyled bumpers. Interior features included upgraded leather upholstery, heated and ventilated seats, and push-button start.

Sixth Generation J100 (1998-2007)

The big changes with the sixth-generation Land Cruiser occurred with the exterior design. It had a longer wheelbase than its predecessors, which provided a larger amount of cabin space. The front end was also made flatter and taller, giving a more commanding presence on the road. In the UK, Toyota offered this generation Land Cruiser with a 3.0-litre diesel engine only.

Used Toyota Landcruiser FAQ's

Which is the most popular engine in the Toyota Land Cruiser?

Even though the newer 2.8-litre diesel engines are more powerful, the used market predominantly features models with the older 3.0-litre configuration. Land Cruisers made before 2015 have these engines.

Which are the most popular trim levels?

Toyota has made the Land Cruiser in several trims, including the Active and Invincible. The most popular among Land Cruiser owners is the Invincible trim because it offers upgraded features that enhance comfort and technology, including black trim touches, clear rear light lenses and, for easier off-road driving, adaptive air suspension and an improved drive mode selector.

What optional extras should I look out for?

Look out for models with added features such as heated second-row seats and tri-zone automatic climate control that make passengers more comfortable. There are also models available with leather interiors in various colours.

Is the Toyota Land Cruiser a good family car?

Yes, the Land Cruiser is designed to accommodate families with ease. It is a reliable model, and it comes with five or seven seats. While the third row is best suited for children, adults can fit back there, and the added space can be beneficial when travelling as a group.

Is there a hybrid version of the Toyota Land Cruiser?

No, the Land Cruiser has never been offered as a hybrid in the UK.

Is the Toyota Land Cruiser available as an automatic?

Toyota has offered the Land Cruiser with both an automatic and a manual gearbox. However, the automatic variants are more commonly found on the used market.

Is there a four-wheel drive version available?

Because the Land Cruiser was designed specifically for off-road driving, four-wheel drive comes standard with every model. Toyota continued improving on the four-wheel drive system with each new generation, enhancing the handling and capability.
