Toyota Verso generations

Toyota Verso is a 7-seater car designed with families in mind, which is evident in its provision of the small-sized third row of rear seats suitable for small children. The Verso faces intense competition from viable alternatives, such as the Renault Grand Scenic or the Ford S-max, which arguably offer more sophistication. However, the Verso scores high on simplicity, safety and reliability. It is limited to only 3 engine power options: 2 petrol options and 1 diesel engine. The smallest is a diesel engine that offers a leisurely speed acceleration of 0-60 mph in 12.7 seconds and a top speed of 115 mph. The higher-performing petrol motor completes the sprint in just 11.1 seconds.

What should you expect to find in a Toyota Verso?

The Toyota Verso comes in 3 different trim levels: the Active 9, the Icon and the Design. The Active 9 trim comes with the following standard features:

  • 4-speaker stereo system with CD player
  • Automatic headlights
  • Daytime running lights
  • Electric-adjusted and heated mirrors
  • Manual air conditioning

The mid-range Icon trim offers a better compromise between cost and equipment. It comes with cruise control, DAB digital radio and other essential features, such as:

  • 16-inch alloy wheels
  • Automatic wipers
  • Centrally-mounted Toyota Touch2 infotainment touchscreen
  • Dual-zone climate control
  • Fold-down tables
  • Folding door mirrors
  • Reverse parking camera

The top-spec Design trim comes with 17-inch alloy wheels, satellite navigation with 3D maps and voice recognition, privacy glass and a panoramic sunroof. Design trim-line owners also get free 3D map updates for 3 years. The Verso offers limited upgrade package options, but there is a pack with essential safety features, such as front and rear parking sensors. If you plan to use it for towing cars, you'll have to purchase an optional detachable tow bar. However, most of these features come as a standard in the Verso's main rivals, minus the tow bar.

Used Toyota Verso FAQ's

Which Toyota Verso engine is the best?

The Verso is available in 3 engine options: a 1.6 litre diesel, 1.6 litre petrol and 1.8 litre petrol. If fuel economy is a critical concern for you, the 67-79 mpg diesel engine is the right choice. However, if you need a more powerful ride, the petrol motor options are better for you. The petrol engines emit 50% more CO2 than the diesel engine, so expect a slightly higher road tax.

How is the handling of the Toyota Verso?

If you need a fun car for driving and cruising at high speeds, then this is not the ride for you. However, the Verso offers comfortable motorway driving for daily commutes and in-town trips with the kids riding along. It provides sufficient grip and has light controls, in addition to its solid feel on the tarmac. However, when tackling sharp bends at high speed, it tends to have an uninspiring body roll.

Is the Toyota Verso a comfortable family car?

If comfort means low road-noise, ample legroom and headroom for reasonably tall adults, plus sufficient space for the kids, then the Verso checks all the boxes. The front and middle rows are spacious, and the seats can also slide back for extra legroom. With the Toyota Easy Flat folding system, you can get over 32 different seating combinations, ensuring you'll have no trouble staying comfortable during a long journey.

Is the Toyota Verso affordable to own?

Since it is not a category-leading car, the Verso is priced lower than most of its competitors. It's also only available in the used auto market, so you can expect to pay much less than its original release price. It also has a low yearly running cost, partly because of Toyota's reputation for producing reliable and durable road machines. Insurance is also very affordable, with the Verso falling into groups 10 and 11. In contrast, most of its other competitors fall into groups 12-15.

How much luggage space does the Toyota Verso offer?

While it's a reliable and efficient car, the Verso is not a full-size MPV, though it can handle a fair amount of luggage. You get 1,155 litres with all 7 seats in place, which increases by an additional 440 litres with the last row folded down. Folding down the second row gives you a massive 1,696 litres of boot space. However, it is still far less than the 2,020 litres of space in the Ford S-Max and 2,181 litres offered in the Citroen Grand C4 Picasso. It makes up for the smaller storage space by providing a wealth of safety features.

Is the Toyota Verso a safe family car?

The Verso was last crash-tested by the Euro NCAP in 2010 and scored an impressive 5-star rating. Even though the safety requirements have become stricter since then, the Toyota Verso remains a reasonably safe car. It comes with many safety features as a standard in all trims, including 7 airbags, electric stability control, a safety belt warning buzzer and traction control. Each trim level also has patented Toyota Safety Technology, which provides lane-departure warning and autonomous braking to avoid collisions.
